Alchemy is a burn event held in Lafayette, GA. It is a festival inspired by Burning Man.

History

The first Alchemy burn was held from September 21 through 23, 2007. In this year, 375 tickets were sold. The event had 18 registered theme camps, which are groups of participants gathered together to provide public offerings centered around a theme.

In 2007, Alchemy was not recognized as an official regional burn by the Burning Man organization, although the event's web page stated that the event was being organized in accordance with the Ten Principles of Burning Man.

Alchemy participants camp privately or in organized theme camps. In 2007, theme camps included: Rhythm Paradise, MoJo Rising, Der Loge Baphomet, the Pink Flamingo Wine Bar, Camp Science, Psy'd Bar, Germania and others. The main event is the burning of an effigy on Saturday night, which, in 2007, was a 24 foot wooden structure modeled after alchemical symbols and which was intended to be evocative of the Alchemy logo itself. At the heart of the temporary city was Center Camp.

The purpose of Alchemy is to create a temporary autonomous city, where each person is expected to be radically self-reliant and participate in the creation of the community. While only a temporary amount of tickets were available, the intimate community of less than 400 produced a sprawling city over 10 acres. Art exhibits included fire drums perforated with various designs, an open set of canvas walls equipped with spray paint, a neon geodesic dome, a psychedelic lighted open bar, a secret "chill-out" spaced denoted as Area 51, and of course the burning of the effigy itself. In attendance were many firedancers specializing in poi spinning, baton twirling, hula hooping and fire fans, all performed on both nights. The event did not draw any media attention, much to the pleasure of the burners, as these events are truly meant to be experienced rather than read about. At burns, such as this one, sitting around and watching the show is not the point. You have to become the show -- burns are genuinely and entirely what you make them.
