Alchemy 2008

Alchemy is the technical festival organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. A chemical engineering fest is a fledgling initiative at IIT Madras.
As the name suggests, we at alchemy celebrate that spirit of investigation which has seen mankind progress from being a slave of his own land to being a master of the art of innovation. We aim at creating a festival where budding engineers from all over the country meet to do what they do best � applying their minds to a slew of creative pursuits.
Spread over two days in March 2008, Alchemy would be an opportunity for students from all over the country to come together and compete at various events, a place where they can exchange ideas, collaborate and learn through lectures and workshops. We start the Alchemy tradition with a ever-so-important theme of "Alternate Energy", which would define the face of our earth in the coming years. So, join us at Alchemy, and help CHEMPOWER the future!

Thou can kill them all, with one game plan!" Clairvoyance is all about the excitement and the roller-coaster ride of handling a company. This competition brings with it the exhilaration and the anguish caused by the vagaries of the market.It is an event for budding entrepreneurs to apply their strategies and market acumen and earn high returns with a nominal investment on their part.
FORMAT:

Teams will be provided with some capital money to acquire a variety of companies . The profile of each company and the sector as whole will be provided . All the companies will be in the same market segment (Fertilizer) but few of them will be producing different products say (Nitrogenous Fertilizer, Urea). Real-market like dynamics are simulated by introducing unforeseen changes and imposing some restrictions, lifting off some restrictions, introducing new technology in the middle, etc.The teams are required to judge offhand how each such change would affect to the cash flows of their company.

Engineered to satiate our innate curiosity of the world around us, this quiz ends up accomplishing much more. In fact, it generates interest in the working of gadgets, contraptions and interesting natural phenomena. Due to the stimulating and fascinating way the questions are packaged and the extensive use of multimedia questions, this event is likely to witness huge participation. This event is the perfect platform to reach out to the inquisitive and investigating engineering brain.

The Ultimate Chemical Engineer

Event Format
This event will consist of three levels - a written preliminary test after which six teams will be qualified, an oral round where the top three teams will be identified and a Project X to end with.

The preliminary test will be in the written format. Six teams will qualify for the finals.

The oral round will have three sub-rounds. The first is a visual round. Questions will be based on pictures or videos. The second round is the Choose Your Topic Round. The teams will be asked to choose a topic from a set and will have to answer question(s) pertaining to that topic. The next round will be the Process Equipment Design Round. The finalists will be given a design and asked to find flaws in it. They might also be asked to suggest some design. Based on the oral questions, top three teams will qualify for the final round, Project X.

In the third round, the participants will be given some scrap material and asked to design a toy model according to the problem. The most efficient design will get maximum points. The winners will be decided according to the cumulative points of the orals and Project X.

Alternate energy

If you are tired of pessimistic doom and gloom tomes on the energy crisis crashing in on the world, step right in.This firecracker of an event is an optimistic one, overflowing with discussions on the cutting edge technology for development of alternate and sustainable energy.
A panel of four distinguished speakers from different fields will give a comprhensive overview of their take on the issue.A synopsis of what one wants to present is required for shortlisitng a selected few students. The selected students can present their ideas and views on the feasability of the available alternate energy resources.
The tools, models and ideas for building a better future lie all around us.Lets gather an insightful toolkit and play our part in the solution.

Process simulation

The workshop aims to educate the participants about the extensive modelling and simulation prowess of the process simulators available today. A wide range of situations encountered in the industry best demonstrated by computer simulation will be presented. Participants will also be given an opportunity to test their skills at the IITM computing facility. This workshop is expected to see a huge rush of registrations.
