An alewyfe was, during the Middle Ages, a woman who kept an alehouse or
a tavern. The word was
first used in the 15th Century. There is a woman in the
Epic of
Gilgamesh named Siduri who is an alewife of the deep sea. She
is confronted by Gilgamesh, and gives him advice to live an
Epicurean lifestyle.
Alewyfe is not to be confused with
alewife,
a type of fish.
