This posts relates to one
of the members of the Kontraband Project. This is a project done by DC area teens in order to
create a media company owned and operated by teens that produced
serious worthwhile music and movies.Some
of the members have decided to give themselves interesting back
stories to add to the mystique of the project. This is one of those back
stories.
At a young age, Falconer became
passionately involved in music. At age 10, he picked up a guitar for the first
time and realized from that day on that he was destined to be a
musician.At age 13, he
began to listen to artists such as David Bowie, Iggy and the Stooges, the
Rolling
Stones, the Velvet Underground, the Smiths, Bob Dylan, and Johnny
Thunders.Although
most of these artists are classified in the rock genre, Falconer
was also heavily influenced by music such as the blues, jazz, funk,
classical, hip-hop, R&B, and other world
musics.At age 15,
Falconer's childhood idol, Robbie Taylor (a highly acclaimed guitarist
from Falconer's own school), graduated. At this time, Falconer felt that he would have
to take Taylor's place as the rocker on
campus.
Point Of
No Return
Before forming his first band, Point of No Return,
Falconer changed his image drastically. He traded in his baggy khakis for tight
jeans, and his preppypolos for slim New York Dollstees. That year Point of No Return played their first
gig at the Springfest, a school event. The band was well received and due to a series
of connections they were able to play a short set at D.C's
9:30
club.A
talent agent
saw the band at the club and signed them to his label Kontraband
Records, a small independent label based in
D.C.Kontraband offered
to record an E.P for the band,
and they happily accepted. The E.P featured six songs including Comrade,
Lethal Weapon, No Situation, Land of the Chains, Freedom?, and the
underground hit Animosity.Shortly after the release of the E.P, Falconer
became frustrated with his role in the band and the political
nature of the music.He
then left Point of No Return and dropped out of school at age
17.
The
Exits
Out of school, Falconer moved to Detroit, Michigan
with the small amount of money he had saved
up.There he met
Jack
Dirving.He and Jack
soon began collaborating and eventually formed the band the
Exits.The band
consisted of Falconer on guitar, Dirving on Bass, David Holland on Drums,
and Brian
Alzens on vocals. The band signed a deal with Cherrybomb
Records, and released their debut "Entrances" which received
warm reviews, and developed a cult
following.As the band
began to tour for the album, tensions between Falconer and the
other members of the band began to arise.Dirving and company began to become concerned
with Falconer's rising popularity and "devil may care"
lifestyle.After a
heated argument, one thing led to another and Falconer was booted
from the band.
That
same night, an intoxicated Falconer was shot 3 times by a man who
he had mistaken for Dirving.Falconer had insulted the man and pushed him
into a wall, who then pulled out a 9 millimeter pistol and fired at
Falconer.1 of the 3
bullets had pierced his chest, centimeters from his
heart.A passerby called
an ambulance which quickly rushed Falconer to the nearest
hospital.There Falconer
spent a month, in which he spent his time writing
songs.
Junkyard
Angels
After he was released, Falconer began to recruit
members for his new band the Junkyard
Angels.He described the
bands sound as what would happen if someone took the songwriting
skills of Dylan, the
variety of Bowie, the raw power of the Stooges, the pure rock
'n' roll of the Stones, and the sophistication of the Smiths and
put them in a blender. Finally after months of searching Falconer
found the members.The
band's lineup consisted of Falconer on guitar, piano, harmonica,
sitar, and vocals, Brendan 0’Conell on bass and organ,
Jerry Buevin
on drums and percussion, and finally Keith Murray on lead vocals and
percussion.After a
brief touring stint across the U.S, the band was picked up by
Shire
Records.They spent
the rest of the year recording their debut album entitled "The
Junkyard Angels Sing the Blues," a primarily punk album with small traces of
the blues.The album was
not well received by the critics, but it sparked a cult following
for the band.
As the
band began touring for the album Falconer was arrested for
Assault and Battery in El Paso, Texas. As
soon as the band finished touring, they went right back into the
studio
to record their sophomore effort entitled
"Carnival".The album
contained traces of avant-jazz and funk, including a song sung by MelloMan, the Jamaican
dub
artist.This time the
album was critically acclaimed, unlike their previous
effort.
As the band
began touring, Falconer met Robert Jones, a famed glam rock musician and occasional
producer.The pair hit
it off immediately and began to collaborate on the Angels' new
album "These Surreal Times Are Too Much For the
Children".While
recording the album Murray and Falconer began to argue over the
direction of the band and Falconer left the band, and brought Jones
with him.
Solo
Falconer and Jones then traveled
to France with some
friends.High up in the
mountains, Falconer and Jones recorded Falconer's first solo album
in an old French chateau.
Falconer then succeded Elvis as
the greatest pop-icon in all of americana, this disturbed him and
he went into hiding.28
years later, he surfaced a new man.As a hippie, he began a quest for the ultimate
granola mixture.He
failed.His granola was
too chewy.A euphoric
expirience drove him to make music about his failed
quest.He did just that
and rekindled his cult following while avoiding
fame.On a fateful day
he was giving a lecture on granola at the University of Wisconsin,
when an estranged lab animal attacked him and his
samples.He was gravely
injured.He survived
after being in a coma for two weeks. He woke up with more drive and began a campaign
to end the misuse of lab animals. His song "Gorilla Ain't No Slave" and his glory
anthem "Mouches for da Mice and Men" both gained him international
acclaim.He lives for
much of his time on a farm in colorado where he explores his
soul.He has been
nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his open arms to
humanity.He lives with
his dog, cat, and gorilla JoJo.
His gorilla is blind deaf and
dumb.
