Alexander Andreev
(born
May 7,
1983) is a civil society and democratic
activist in
Russia. He has
worked with the
G8 Summit
International Advisory Council, the
UN World Food Programme, and the
International AIDS Conference in Toronto. In 2005 Alexander
represented Russia at Europe and Eurasia Young Political Leaders
Seminar in Macedonia. In 2003-2006 he managed Democratic Movement
"
Progressive Youth Union" (NGO) and
was involved in social and political activities of
Samara Oblast,
Russia.
Education
Alexander Andreev finished Higher
Law College with honours in 2000 in Samara, Russia with a
professional qualification in Law. In 2005 he graduated with honors
from
Samara State University with the
degree in Philology (Specialisation: English Language and
Literature). During his student years Alexander held elected
positions as Chair of Student Academic Society and Debating Club at
the Department of Philology. He completed his thesis on
contemporary political discourse, studying the relationship between
language and politics. In 2004 Alexander took an internship in the
Ministry of International and Foreign Economic Relations,
Government of Samara Region.
Career
His engagement with
civil society started in 2003 when he became the originator of
"Progressive Youth Union of Samara Region", the initiative group of
socially active students. In March 2004 264 delegates representing
towns and districts, youth clubs and organisations of Samara Region
elected him President of Samara Regional Democratic Movement
“Progressive Youth Union” at the Constituent Assembly. Since 2003
he is Member of the United Nations Association of Russia. The same
year he was elected Member of Youth Parliament at Samara Regional
Legislature from the Council of Youth Associations of Samara
Region. In 2004 Alexander ran for Samara City Council being the
youngest candidate in the campaign history of Samara Region (aged
21), registered on the basis of the voters' signatures with rating
15-20%. Alexander is the author of the regional bill on youth
social policies, which he introduced to Samara Regional Legislature
in 2005. The same year Alexander became one of the initiators of
the regional democratic coalition, which was jointly formed by
Russian Democratic Party “Yabloko”, Association “Golos”, Regional
Public Union, and other organisations aiming at democratic change
in Russia. Alexander is a member of Russian Civil Congress
established in Moscow in December 2004. In 2006 Alexander served as
Temporary Plenipotentiary Representative of the United Nations
World Food Programme for Samara rally of Global Campaign “Fight
Hunger: Walk the World 2006”. In August 2006 he worked in the media
centre of the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada,
taking part in discussions, workshops and high level meetings on
HIV and public health policy. In 2007 he continued working with the
World Food Programme for the Fight Hunger Walk.
In 2001-2006
Alexander worked on Radio “Samara Maximum”, an affiliate of Radio
“Liberty/Free Europe” and “Deutsche Welle”, as an editor of Weekly
Radio Show “Rave Time” (ranked Best Youth Broadcast 2003), he
arranged prime-time talk-shows with prominent politicians and
public figures. Alexander participated in on-air broadcasts of
“Voice of America”. In September 2002 he led a local group of
politically active youth at the meeting with the Prague staff of
Radio “Liberty”. Alexander is also an initiator of the first
Christian Orthodox broadcast for young people launched on the radio
in cooperation with Russian Orthodox Church.
In 2006 Alexander
Andreev joined Civil G8 - the International Forum of
Nongovernmental Organisations under the G8 Summit. He is a partner
of ACEVO - Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary
Organisations, an influential policy making actor in the UK. In
October 2005 Alexander represented Russia at Europe and Eurasia
Young Political Leaders Conference in Skopje and Ohrid, FYRO
Macedonia. Alexander is an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State
International Visitor Leadership Program on the topic of political
party development: in 2004 on the invitation of Ambassador Vershbow
he visited Washington D.C., New York and other American cities to
participate in professional meetings at the Department of State, US
Congress, Democratic and Republican National Committees, National
Democratic Institute, Georgetown University, American University,
CNN, media and NGOs.
Awards
Alexander Andreev was
awarded Diploma “Generation Portrait” in 2003 by the Governor of
Samara Region. He is also awarded the Archbishop Diploma “in Holy
Blessing for Actions in the Glory of Russian Orthodox Church”
granted by Archbishop Sergius. Alexander was a laureate of “Natural
Selection - Brilliant Darwin” Recognition Award granted by TV
channel “TNT-Orion” and Department for Youth Affairs of Samara
Region. In 2006 Alexander was officially named Honorary Citizen of
the City of District Heights (suburban to Washington, D.C.),
Maryland, USA, for his dedication "to better international
relations in Eastern Europe". He holds the appreciation letter from
Arlene Mitchell, Director of the UN World Food Programme Fight
Hunger Division.
