Alfred and Arthur is a book by Garrett Jones. The full title of this book [ISBN 0-7552-0055-1] is Alfred and Arthur: an historic friendship, 2001. It is the story, told largely in their own words, of the love between Alfred Tennyson and his undergraduate friend, Arthur Hallam. Arthur was engaged to the poet's sister, Emilia Tennyson, when, at the age of 22, he died suddenly in Vienna in 1833. When Alfred published In Memoriam anonymously in 1850, an early reviewer thought it must be the work of a heartbroken widow. When Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria found In Memoriam more comforting than any other secular writing. This book shows how Arthur continued to haunt Alfred throughout his long life.
