One of the oldest commercial establishments in
Cambridge, Massachusetts , the
Algiers Coffee House is located on the second and third floors of
historic
Brattle
Hall, originally the home of the
Cambridge
Social Union and since then of the
Brattle
Theater.
The cafe has an impressive menu. It serves
French-style breakfast all day, specialty
Middle-Eastern-style
coffee drinks in addition to drip-coffee, tea, and espresso,
and a full menu of both western and eastern dishes. While coffee
drinks are relatively expensive, refills on most are free. Food is
slightly pricy, but there are some frugal deals: the $12
Combination Salad comes with a basket of pita bread, spicy lentil
rice,
baba
ghanoush,
tabbouleh, Algiers' signature green
falafel, and
hummus, and is generously portioned enough to
easily serve two people.
The decor of Algiers is amazing; upon
entering, you can seat yourself either on the main floor or
upstairs. The upper level is built as a round balcony and overlooks
the entryway. Rich wood panelling and opulent colors predominate;
Algiers is geometric and sparkling. Before
Cambridge passed its smoking ban,
smoking was permitted on the second floor of the restaurant. Since
then, Algiers has added a second-story roofdeck where patrons can
smoke (or simply enjoy the scenery on Brattle Street below) at
round tables shaded by umbrellas.
