Ali Naqvi, New Democrat candidate for MP Etobicoke North.

Ali Naqvi is a Canadian social democratic politician, and lawyer. He has run for political office at both the federal and provincial levels of government for the New Democratic Party (NDP); and was the NDP candidate for the riding of Etobicoke North, in the Canadian federal election.

Personal life and education

Ali Naqvi was born in Karachi, Pakistan, on November 16, 1964. He attended the University of Karachi where he received the following degrees: a Bachelor of Commerce; Masters of International Relations; and Law. He then received a Law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He now practices immigration law at Naqvi and Associates LL.Ms. Besides being a lawyer, Naqvi also works as an immigration consultant. He is a vice president of the International Law Society and serves as a tenant representative on housing issues. He lives with his wife Raisa Sharipova and their two children Zain and Ameer.

Political career

Naqvi ran for the New Democratic Party in four elections and was defeated every time. His first run for elected office was in the electoral district of Don Valley West in the 2000 federal election. His second election was during the 2003 Ontario provincial election, also in Don Valley West. In the 2006 federal election he ran for the NDP in Etobicoke North; and again in the same electoral district during the 2008 federal election.

Naqvi is a member of a grassroots citizens coalation, the Community Organizing for Responsible Development (CORD). It lobbies for area businesses to hire locally, community development, and political empowerment in Rexdale.

Naqvi isn't the only member of his family that has run for political office. His brother Yasir Naqvi, is the Ontario Liberal Party MPP for the Ottawa Centre electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
