Love Island (originally Celebrity Love Island) was a daily British reality television programme. In the show, twelve single "celebrities" spent five weeks on an island in Fiji. Viewers would vote for the couple they would like to see in the "love shack" where the two would get to know one another better. In the first season, each week viewers voted "celebrities" off the island, but in the second, the inhabitants had the final say. The identities of those being kicked out were revealed in the eviction episodes. The prize for the final couple left standing was £50,000. The second season also featured the inhabitants having to cook and clean up after themselves to fight the appearance that they were just there for a free holiday.[1][2] It was originally presented by Patrick Kielty and Kelly Brook, with Fearne Cotton taking over as female host in the second series. It is aired in the UK on ITV. The first series aired in the summer of 2005, and it was won by Jayne Middlemiss and Fran Cosgrave. The second series began in July 2006, dropping Celebrity from its name. It was won by Bianca Gascoigne and Calum Best. The theme tune for the first series was Wish I, performed by Jem. A specially-composed summer theme by Daniel Pemberton (later released under the title From Fiji With Love) was used for the second series. The show was axed in November 2006.

The show attracted controversy from the moment it was announced by ITV. It was marketed as a rival for Channel 4's popular reality show, Big Brother, which returned for a sixth series soon after the show's launch. Many commentators felt that the format of the show provided low quality television as an excuse to attract high ratings.

Following the launch of the show, the celebrities were criticised by viewers for being boring, and the celebrity status of some of the participants was questioned. There was some suspicion that the contestants were simply using the programme as a free holiday, and the tabloids claimed that producers held crisis meetings to figure out how to keep things interesting.[3]

Soon afterwards, tabloid reports claimed that the show's presenters, Kelly Brook and Patrick Kielty, were engaged in a bitter feud. The problems between the pair allegedly started after Kielty told viewers on the live show that Brook had previously been involved in a relationship with one of the contestants, Paul Danan.[4] However, even the promise of fireworks between the two hosts was not enough to keep viewers interested, and one episode of the show only attracted less than 2 million viewers. Producers later hired model Nikki Ziering to spice up the show.

The show was also resented by fans of long-running ITV soap Coronation Street. ITV decided to move its flagship programme from 19:30 to 20:30 on Monday nights, to provide a successful lead-in for Love Island, in the hope of increasing ratings. Writers John Fay and Daran Little complained to the press about the treatment of the show. ITV argued that it took the decision to move the soap very seriously and only did so when absolutely necessary. A meeting was requested with ITV programming director Nigel Pickard to discuss the issue.[5]

On 10 June 2005, although ratings were beginning to pick up, with the show close to overtaking Big Brother in popularity, a strong storm over the islands of Fiji disrupted the programme. A live eviction show had to be cancelled as 6 foot waves made it impossible for crew-members to cross over to where the celebrities were staying. Instead, ITV was forced to repeat the episode from the previous night with unseen footage.

The show was so badly received by viewers and critics that the word 'Celebrity' is now seen as tainted by UK television companies. An interesting example was Sky TV's celebrity golf tournament, broadcast on Sky One on the August Bank Holiday weekend 2005, was called All*Star Cup and Sky ceased referring to "celebrities" in trailers. On ITV, the 'celebrity' version of The X Factor was called "Battle of the Stars".

Series Two (2006)

The second series first aired on 10 July, and ran for seven weeks, a little longer than the previous year's series. It was announced in late May 2006 that Fearne Cotton would be Kielty's new co-host with Series 1 winner Jayne Middlemiss presenting Aftersun with Matt Brown on ITV2. It also has a new sponsor, popular chocolate bar Bounty.

On 6 July the list of contestants was announced, with the news that the word "Celebrity" would be dropped from the show title [6].

House guests on Love Island

  • On Love Island three house guests entered the resort for set periods of time, which was usually a contract of a week. House guests were not eligible for evictions or winning the prize fund of £50,000 at the end of the series, but were allowed to be voted into the Love Shack. As with the actual contestants they received an appearance salary.

Dennis Rodman Former NBA champion, CBB 2006 contestant Week 3 (Stayed 4 days before quitting)
Steve-O Clown and stuntman Jackass Week 2 (Stayed 2 days because he was not allowed the beer and chocolate which he requested)

Returns

  • In week two, in a bid to boost the ratings, the producers decided series one contestant Paul Danan would be put on Love Island as a regular contestant hoping he would provide the rating winning actions of the previous year. Paul was known by most on the Island especially friend Lee Otway and Lady Victoria Hervey whose sister Isabella was involved with him in the first series and for a short period afterwards.
  • On 7 August series one finalist Calum Best entered Love Island for the second time, where he attracted a lot of female attention, especially from Bianca Gascoigne, with whom he struck up a romance.
  • After Sophie Anderton and Chris Brosnan were seen getting closer, evicted Lady Victoria Hervey returned to the Island for a day and hid in the secret suite where she confronted her friend Sophie and poured a bottle of wine over her head for moving in on her man.
  • On 20 August Leo Ihenacho made a surprise return by jumping out of a cake, to the resort for one night only to confront Calum and Bianca over their relationship. He left the next day.

Notes

On 18 July, Steve-O was added to the show in an effort to boost ratings. Despite stating he has stopped drinking he asked for beer while on the show. On 19 July, he abruptly left Love Island because he was not allowed enough alcohol or chocolate[7]

Lady Victoria Hervey was voted off the show on Friday 21 July although her chosen man Chris Brosnan had been the favourite to leave. Hervey told hosts Patrick Kielty and Fearne Cotton that she hoped the relationship would continue in the real world but then had second thoughts when she was shown footage of Brosnan saying that he also liked Colleen.

Basketball legend Dennis Rodman entered the show on the third week on 27 July as a House guest to boost the ratings. he flirted with Colleen Shannon, and created friction with Lee Otway before walking in the midst of an argument between Lee and Paul Danan, on his fourth day on 30 July out of the seven contracted until 3 August 2006.

Identical twins Emma and Eve Ryan joined the Love Island on 31 July, but were ejected from the show by producers on 4 August. No explanation was given to the public.

It was announced on 6 August that Calum Best would enter Love Island next day. Also on 6 August, it was confirmed on the Love Island website that Shane Lynch had left the island to make up with a woman back home.

On 14 August, Big Brother 3 winner Kate Lawler entered Love Island.

On final night, 28 August 2006, Kate Lawler was the last girl to be evicted before the final showdown.

The winners were Bianca Gascoigne and Calum Best, with Kéllé Bryan and Brendan Cole runners-up.

An average of 3.8 million people tuned in to watch the final, peaking at 4.4m, down from last year's peak figure of 5.9 million.

Head to Head with Big Brother

The show did not always go head to head with Channel 4's Big Brother, as Big Brother aired at 9pm on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and only clashed on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with Love Island at 10pm. However, many terrestrial viewers in Wales could only watch Big Brother at a fixed 10.00pm slot every night on S4C which also broadcast the show due to many Welsh terrestrial televisions failing to receive Channel 4. Love Island's audience was about half the size of that for Big Brother. [8]

Cancellation

On 24 November 2006, ITV revealed that a third series would not be made and that it was axing Love Island. [9]

ALICIA DOUVALL is a modern day tabloid and popular culture phenomenon.

Although the likes of glamour girls Jordan (aka Katie Price) and Jodie Marsh
are well known in England, one only has to search on Internet search engines
like Google to see that Alicia Douvall’s name appears in numerous languages
underlining that she is a subject of international curiosity and fascination
in many countries around the world.

Born Sarah Howes, daughter of a millionaire, Alicia was educated at a
private school in West Sussex. Aged 15, she was expelled and, reportedly
after a number of scrapes with the law , her mother and father pleaded with
her to
keep out of trouble.

Channelling her energy, drive and ambition to achieve fame and fortune, she
began a career in Glamour modelling. She dyed her hair blonde and changed
her name to Alicia Douvall "because it sounded French and sexy".

It has been claimed that her father funded her almost obsessive craving for
surgery – reportedly concerned that she might otherwise slip into a life to
hard porn or prostitution to pay for further operations

Much maligned and often misunderstood, Alicia possesses a devilish sense of
humour and shrewd understanding of the media business and opportunities that
it can offer. There is also an intriguing vulnerability that hints at a
possibly painful past.

Her agent Richard Brecker says: "One senses that underneath the perceived
brash exterior is a sweet girl with an overwhelming need to love and be
loved. Alicia was caught up the in catastrophic Tsunami which caused such
devastation across south east Asia on Boxing Day 2004. She was holidaying in
Phuket when the tragedy struck and spent her time trying to help children
and others in need in the local population in the aftermath"

And, of her numerous much publicised breast operations, liposuction and
Botox injections, she says simply "I spent a fortune so I could be liked by
men," She added "I thought big boobs would give me everything I wanted -
fame, money and men. Now I realise it wasn't worth the sacrifice."

Brecker who secured Douvall's appearance on the widely criticised English
reality television series "Love Island" says: "Alicia is endearingly self
effacing" "She is not averse to sending herself up and Alicia always said
before she went in the show, she said she thought viewers would like
watching her because she would be, (in her own words) “compelling car crash
television”

Douvall once claims to have fooled an ex lover, Lee Ryan, the heart-throb
singer formerly of boy band BLUE, into thinking she was Italian for the
first two months of their relationship by speaking to him only in Italian
and pretending to not even speak English.

Her face has been seen by millions of people around the globe having
continually starred in countless modelling shoots for calendars, national
newspapers and magazines for more than half a decade.

In September 2000, Alicia captured the media spotlight she had yearned for
following an affair with soccer star Dwight Yorke, then playing for
Manchester Utd and who later went on to father the son of glamour rival
Jordan. The relationship with Dwight propelled Alicia into the headlines and
lucrative modelling offers followed. Her star billing on the cover of lads
magazine ICE in August 2002 highlighted the inevitable comparisons and
competition with the money making machine Jordan.

Alicia has been described by the Tabloid press as ‘Queen of Kiss and Tell'
with the list of celebrities who have reportedly fallen for her charms
reading like a Who’s Who of the pages of OK! Magazine: X Factor Mr Nasty
Simon Cowell, pop star Dane Bowers, DJ Toby Anstis, music mogul P Diddy
(with whom she conceived a child she subsequently sadly miscarried) and
Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall.

Other conquests are said to have ranged from EastEnders slimline star Dean
Gaffney to Hollywood film heavyweights Jack Nicholson and Mickey Rourke .The
media has also extensively reported on Alicia’s on-off engagement to
American basketball superstar Dennis Rodman who recently attracted headlines
in the most recent ”Celebrity Big Brother” television series shown on
England’s Channel 4.

But it would be all too easy to dismiss Alicia as some kind of cold,
calculating, beach ball-breasted airhead on the make – as some lazy
newspaper columnists seem too prone to do - without ever even having met her
or stopping to consider what has made Alicia the fascinating and
contradictory personality she is today.

As Alicia points out "I was always hoping for a relationship, not a
one-night stand."

In addition to being the Queen of Kiss and Tell, she can also lay claim to
the crown of ‘Queen of Plastic Surgery’, having spent more than £30,000 on
six breast enlargements (plus a later breast reduction), three nose jobs,
two liposuctions and a tummy tuck.

In 2003, Alicia described her horror when one of her 30FF artificial breasts
exploded. She admits that she felt a "freak" and that when she went out
people whispered 'Here comes the Bride of Frankenstein'."

Alicia was rushed into hospital when the silicone implant in her left breast
started leaking and had to be removed immediately.

During the three-hour operation, the implant erupted, sending potentially
lethal silicone into her bloodstream. After the surgery at London's private
Wellington Hospital, Alicia - once a natural 32B - needed large doses of
pain killers. Alicia now has a 34c bust and says she is happy with both the
way she looks and the way she feels.

In the past year, Alicia has been busy promoting her raunchy, all-girl
burlesque-style group “Good Girls Gone Bad".

They have been touring the UK with Alicia enjoying the limelight as lead
singer at venues such as the fashionable Cobden Club in west London. The
group's current line-up comprises Grace Adams-Short of English reality show
Big Brother, plus models and dancers Shakira, Suzanne, , Lisa, Erin and
Holly and their repertoire includes their single "Bad Girls" “Nutbush City
Limits”, “Lady Marmalade” and “Hey Big Spender.”

Alicia has also been clocking up thousands of air miles flying back and
forth across the Atlantic to collaborate with acclaimed writers and
producers such as Pat Leonard and Narada Michael Walden (famed for their
work with Madonna and Michael Jackson respectively) and she hopes a new solo
rock hip hop album may one day be released in the US.

Alicia now divides her time between London, Los Angeles and New York where
she has been asked to model for “Body” magazine and to be the face of the
Star City Jeans label and she has been creating her own website which will
enable her fans to see her latest pictures and news and to pay for exclusive
videos

Her TV credits include "The Price of Fame" on ITV1, a documentary with
former Mirror editor Piers Morgan for Channel Four and “News Review”
discussing appearance and the media.

Alicia has also featured in a number of other factual programmes including
Sky One’s show "Celebrity Babes Behaving Badly" and, in similar vein, ITV1s
"Bad Girls" in September 2002 when her vocal talents were deployed to sing
the documentary’s title theme tune. The documentary is not be confused with
the namesake ITV television girls jail drama series - although it is no
surprise to know that Alicia would love to star in the hit series as a
wayward prisoner!

Having taken acting lessons in America, Alicia has found herself in demand
by a number of upcoming British independent film makers and she is also
planning to write a no-holds barred book.

Alicia has an 11-year-old daughter Georgia who lives with her in her
luxurious home in London's Belgravia with their three dogs, Gucci, Armani
and Versace.

Her hobbies include keep-fit, running, cycling, dancing, meeting people

All that remains to make her life complete is the love of a good man and
2006 may yet see the realisation of her dreams…

Sadly she did not manage love when she joined the cast of the television
series "LOVE ISLAND" which proved a ratings disaster and saw Alicia walk off
the set after being faced with being the first so-called "celebrity" to be
evicted from the paradise island in Fiji in July 2006

She also became a figure of fun for failing to recite the Alphabet
correctly, a humiliation which viewers did not realise was caused by
dyslexia, and she further embarrassed herself by proving a calamity in the
kitchen when trying to make the ostensibly idiot proof dish of Baked beans
on Toast for her fellow contestants !

Having taken a shine to fellow cast member Leo Ihenacho of the band The
Streets, Douvall suffered the indignity of having to watch as Leo
subsequently developed a close relationship with Bianca Gascoigne (daughter
of soccer star Paul) before Leo was voted off the ailing show.
