In June 2006, AllianceBernstein LLC published a ground-breaking report titled "The Emergence of Hybrid Vehicles: Ending Oil Stranglehold on Transportation and the Economy," see adoption rate. [1]Felix Kramer of The California Cars Initiative, or CalCars, has called this "very significant" report an "eye-opener" and "influential" as it was the first among major investment management, investment banking, and management consulting firms to predict hybrid electric vehicles would eventually come to dominate passenger vehicles [2] [3][4].

The case for hybrids

At the time of its publication, most other analysts, consultants/strategists, and industry executives, saw improvements to the internal combustion engine, and/or biofuel, diesel, ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen, and fuel cells as more promising technologies. As to why hybrid electric vehicles would win, AllianceBernstein based its argument on their ability to deliver better performance and fuel efficiency as well as their to improve faster in terms performance, efficiency, and costs (via development of supply chains, and learning and scale benefits). The report also highlights how hybrid electric vehicles will change the game for many industries from autos and energy to technology.

Investment

Concurrent with the report, AllianceBerstein also became an early investor, via its venture capital fund, in A123Systems, a US based lithium-ion battery producer, alongside General Electric, CMEA Capital, MIT, Motorola, Qualcomm, and Sequoia Capital. [38]
