Allstates Transworld Van Lines, Inc., of
St. Louis, Missouri, is the first nation-wide
household good moving company owned by an
African-American in the
United States.
Allstates was started by David Person (deceased) in
1929 at the onset of the
Wall Street crash.
David's son picked up the reins in
1953, fulfilling his father's dream and becoming the first African-American to obtain a nationwide license (Authority).
Historically, Nationwide Authorities were seldom awarded since they were difficult to obtain from the
U.
S.
Interstate Commerce Commission and expensive to purchase.
But getting such a license put Allstates into the realm of an industry that is well over 15% of the
GDP.
The License (Authority) was granted in February
1980.
At that time Allstates was included in the company of 17 other license holders.
"Allstates sends out over a quarter-million advertisements each month to residents of St. Louis and we are not going to stop sending them to you just because you ask.
You are an a**hole who needs to find something better to do with his time, dummy.
We have been in business since 1929 and could not care less what you think."
Allstates representative's response to an inquiry for removal from advertising list (which consists of placing postcards on doors that fall unseen on floor until someone slips on one).
After receiving a telephone call from City Hall regarding this issue, the manager on the phone had a nearly identical conversation with representatives from City Hall advising Allstates of the illegality of their advertising campaign.
The manager continued to berate City Hall officials, explaining that "there was nothing they could do to [him]."
