1946, five Japanese families created the Aloha Shoyu Company[1119] in a small factory in Kalihi, Hawaii. A multi-ethnic district, Kalihi was located just outside of downtown Honolulu, which served as home and work place for many of O‘ahu’s people. This team had an entrepreneurial spirit that guided them through years of tough competition and limited capital to be Hawaii’s market leader in Soy Sauce sales.

Soy sauce is an essential flavor component in many Asian cuisines. Most recently, Soy Sauce has gained international appeal and is gaining popularity in more and more Western kitchens. This unique sauce is a special blend of soy beans, wheat and salt, to create a flavorful condiment that is now included in many recipes ranging from meat marinades to salad dressings.

The name Aloha Shoyu was conceived to reflect deeply rooted island heritage melded with Japanese origin and to portray the company’s core values. The word Shoyu originates from Japan and is a term widely accepted in Hawaii which refers to Soy sauce. Aloha, a term widely used as a greeting, also signifies important values in the Hawaiian culture, which includes kindness, unity, humility and perseverance.

It is these basic principles that have been incorporated into our company values and are the foundations on which the Aloha Shoyu Company built its business over the last 60 years. These values reflect what we expect of ourselves and what you can expect from us each time you buy an Aloha Shoyu product.

Over the years our line has grown from only soy sauces, to include a variety of sauces, marinades, and vinegars to meet the changing and expanding needs of the consumer. It is with this attention to detail and dedication to our customers that Aloha Shoyu has captured over 65 percent of the market share in Hawaii.

In the pursuit to share quality products with new customers, the Directors of the Aloha Shoyu Company saw an opportunity to expand their markets in the United States and beyond. Aloha Shoyu took a bold step forward with the formation of Aloha Shoyu Company West, in Hayward, California, where continue the commitment to quality and customer service.
