History

AEZ was founded in 2003 at the University of California, Berkeley by Sundeep Chanana, Mohit Jain, Himanshu Shah, and Manpreet Gill. All four are alumni of the Haas School of Business at Cal. The group originally intended to establish a social fraternity at the Berkeley campus, but after exploring some options, it later decided to begin a professional one. It sought to promote and foster what came to be known as the "ideal man philosophy," that is, excelling both professionally and academically. As a result, AEZ became the first South Asian fraternity at UC Berkeley. [1] It initiated its first pledge class in the fall of 2003. In 2008, the fraternity began expansion efforts at Stanford University, which will likely host AEZ's second chapter.

Mission statement

Alpha Epsilon Zeta Fraternity Incorporated is dedicated to promoting and fostering professionalism, brotherhood, unity, tradition, culture, and high moral values. Every brother of Alpha Epsilon Zeta Fraternity Incorporated strives to live by the ideal man philosophy that entails excelling both professionally and academically. Its goal is to create the largest South Asian network amongst professionals and graduate schools. The Founding Fathers believed in these ideals and came together in order to establish an organization that would produce future leaders in our community.[2]

Multi-disciplinary focus

Unlike most other professional fraternities, Alpha Epsilon Zeta does not focus on member development in any one particular field of study. Males of all majors join the organization. AEZ states that its intention is to have each "brother" of the organization share his knowledge of his major with the other members, in order to give each person a well-rounded foundation and to promote brotherhood.[3] However, AEZ requires all members to participate in professional skill development activities, which it deems necessary for any career path. These include presentation skills, interviewing skills, networking skills, and resume constructing.

Logo and coat of arms

AEZ Official Logo

Alpha Epsilon Zeta's logo is similar to that of other fraternities in that is an acronym; however, it lacks traditional Greek lettering. Instead, "AEZ" is represented in a pseudo-Sanskrit writing that reinforces the organization's ties to South Asian culture.

The coat of arms of Alpha Epsilon Zeta contains a number of symbolic objects that are representative of the organization's core values. The specific meaning of these objects is only revealed to pledges during pledgeship and at initiation.

Alpha Epsilon Zeta ( AEZ) is the west coast premier South Asian professional fraternity. AEZ was founded at the University of California, Berkeley on February 19th, 2003. The founders of AEZ aspired to create the largest South Asian network of professionals and graduate schools across the globe. The next group of students to be initiated into the fraternity will represent the Zeta class.

AEZ strives to enhance its brothers' many skills and characteristics such as interpersonal abilities, confidence, and articulation.
AEZ is an organization of extreme diversity as they aim at excelling academically, professionally, and within their community. Membership in AEZ is not limited to any one ethic group, nor is it dedicated to any one area of academic study. AEZ's group of members represent a diverse number of academic majors including: EECS, Business Administration, Molecular & Cell Biology, Mathematics, Economics, South Asian Studies, and many more<ref>http://students.berkeley.edu/osl/studentgroups/public/index.asp?todo=searchgroups&keyword=alpha epsilon zeta</ref>.

History

Alpha Epsilon Zeta Fraternity, Inc. was founded and established in September 2002 at the University of California, Berkeley by Sundeep Chanana, Sonu Gill, Mohit Jain, and Himanshu Shah.
After analyzing numerous options, including already-established South Asian organizations, it was clear to the founding fathers that no other organization accurately upheld the same ideals and values that they believed in. Nevertheless, they were able to derive some benefits from these efforts—applying only effective methods of learning, incorporating refined elements of structure, and combining current perspectives with newly gained philosophies to make their organization stronger.

The vision of creating the largest South Asian network was shared by many individuals who collectively formed this organization to turn this idea into a reality.
In the Fall of 2003, UC Berkeley proudly hosted Alpha Epsilon Zeta Fraternity, Inc.’s first pledge class. They are currently in the process of establishing chapters in colleges across the country and eventually overseas to establish a wider network of students and professionals.

Mission Statement

Alpha Epsilon Zeta Fraternity, Inc. is dedicated to promoting and fostering professionalism, brotherhood, unity, tradition, culture, and high moral values.
Every brother of AEZ strives to excel both professionally and academically. Its goal is to create the largest South Asian network amongst professionals and graduate schools. The founding fathers believed in these ideals and came together in order to establish an organization that would produce future leaders in our community.

Professionalism

Alpha Epsilon Zeta harnesses the strong bonds of brotherhood forged in the close environment of a fraternity to successfully prepare its members for the professional world.
As opposed to other professional fraternities that are strictly defined by a single major or field, AEZ proudly distinguishes itself in its ability to attract talented students from across the entire academic spectrum. Alpha Epsilon Zeta achieves this rich diversity by focusing on the development of a robust professional foundation. AEZ builds this platform by honing fundamental professional skills, critical to success in any career path, including presentation skills, interviewing skills, networking skills and resume writing.

Events

Throughout the academic year, Alpha Epsilon Zeta organizes various events that function to bridge the gap between the organization and the campus-wide community.
Specifically, in Spring 2008, AEZ worked with "REACH!" to mentor potential Cal students.

"Professional Reality Forums” are designed to enlighten students with special insights into the ever evolving professional world around them.
Essentially, the events leave students better equipped for the challenges encountered along different career paths. Previous events have included “ PhD or House MD-What’s right for me?” and “Disruptive Innovation."

In addition to contributing to the community professionally, AEZ holds social-fundraisers.
Their most popular social event is the Berkeley Series of Poker (BSOP). Similar to the World Series of Poker, BSOP is an event that distinguishes who the best poker player at Berkeley is, rewarding them with the championship title along with a variety of prizes every year. Prizes have included the Wii, X-Box 360, Sony PSP, iPod Shuffle, and an American Airlines round-trip ticket.

In Fall 2007, AEZ also held a UC Applications workshop at James Logan in Union City, providing a variety of services for a group of students.
The workshop featured two admissions officers and included SAT prep, personal statement editing, and a segment on campus choices.

Community Service

The fraternity’s commitment to community service is illustrated by its participation in events such as Relay for Life.
AEZ has established strong links with organizations such as the Sankara Eye Foundation. The fraternity’s plans to organize “professional development workshops” in local high schools that are designed to cover crucial subject areas unfortunately overlooked in the school curriculum.

Previously AEZ offered the G-Card.
The G-Card brought to market a new standard in university discount cards. Based on a business model that leverages more food options than any existing university discount card, comparable savings to any existing university discount card and inexpensive printing and production, the G Card offered customers enhanced choices at a lower cost. Approximately 40 business' contributed to the 400 G-Cards sold at $5 each.

Brothers

The proactive, independent minded brothers of Alpha Epsilon Zeta are groomed to become future leaders representing the South Asian community.
The brothers of Alpha Epsilon Zeta have lived up to this vision by being presidents of other university clubs and by leading student-run classes. Members of Alpha Epsilon Zeta demonstrate their individual initiative by piloting their own ventures. Fully shaped by the fraternity’s culture to excel and lead, the alumni of AEZ have entered companies such as McKinsey and have gained admission into top Ivy league graduate schools.

Expansion

Alpha Epsilon Zeta is determined to replicate the success it has had at UC Berkeley.
Currently, AEZ is pursuing an expansion effort focused primarily on west coast universities but will continue to be amenable to keen interest expressed by universities outside of this region. Please contact Rakesh Chanana at rchanana@berkeley.edu for expansion materials.
