Alrite Travel is an operator of
bus services in
North East England. It is based near
Middlesbrough in the Skippers Lane Industrial
Estate.
It runs a number of commercial and council-supported
bus services around the local
Tees Valley
area, mainly serving
Billingham,
Stockton-on-Tees and
Middlesbrough.
They
bought a load of old buses that should have been scrapped and
operate the most erratic service in the history of
transport.
The bus drivers seem to have no clue about what fares
they should charge and quite often will ask you how much Arriva
charge and then knock 20p off. They don't issue tickets, they
should but mostly run out of ticket paper even though they hardly
ever have any passengers.
They seem to operate a "scavenger"
service: often arriving slightly before a schedulued Arriva bus.
This would seem to be a savvy business strategy except the buses,
instead of following the Arriva route and collecting all of their
passengers, proceed on the most convoluted treck around
east-cleveland. One would expect a bus to Middlesbrough to head to
Middlesbrough, not double back to Lingdale, then Nunthorpe, then
the James Cook Hospital...the actual journey is a test of patience
and arrives far, far later than the Arriva service. In fact, once
you get on you just wish you could get off and go wait for the
Arriva bus.
