Alternate Marvel, or casually Altmarvel, is a series of fanfiction tales that tells stories occurring in a timeline divergent from canon Marvel's main line. Treated much like a What If storyline, it poses the question, "What If the Marvel Super-Heroes defeated Onslaught without Heroes Reborn Occurring?"

History

Alternate Marvel began in June 2000 when callouts were sent on various Internet discussion groups, asking if there were interested people who would like to write fan-fiction based on Marvel characters. More than thirty interested writers replied, but the group was culled to seven. Originally conceived as a general fan-fiction group, it was narrowed to a specific set of parameter to create a cohesive vision. At one point, the group gained enough popularily to garner a mention in the comic magazine Wizard Magazine.

Offerings

Alternate Marvel offers such Marvel staples as The Amazing Spider-Man, The Uncanny X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. Other series include A-Next, Brother Voodoo, Academy X, and The New Warriors. There are also many original offerings, such as Avalanche, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Highlander, Window Into the Unknown, Topaz, Squirrel Girl, Blue Cyclone, Legends, The Guard, The Lives and Times of Mister X, Slyde, as well as many others.

The Altmarvel Curse

A long-standing 'curse' has been apparent throughout the group's history: Any writer who joined with the intention of writing either The Fantastic Four or Captain America would last no longer than a few weeks before severing communication. Any attempt to get word from these writers resulted in nothing. A joke began in the Altmarvel community that this was as a result of a curse on these two series. Since then, the curse seems to have 'lifted' from the Fantastic Four, though Captain America still remains with no writer.
