Alternative natural history, also known as speculative biology, is the extrapolation of the laws of evolution into the future to hypothesize about future species.
Also, it explores questions such as how would life have evloved if dinosaurs never died out.

The well known discovery mini-series The future is wild is a good example of speculative biology.

Criticism

Alternative natural history or speculative biology has often been critisized as pseudoscience.
They point to the fact that ecolution is not linear, therefore it impossible to accurately determin which direction evolution will take. In other words, it is just speculation.

Fiction

This theme has commonly been used in science fiction, especially in time-travel situations.
