Alwarpet is a mixed residential zone in central Chennai. It is a prestigious residential area and contains the two best residential colonies of Chennai, namely the Boat Club and the Poes Garden. As on 2010, this still remains the costliest residential area of Chennai. Earlier it was a purely residential locality of Chennai occupied predominantly by Brahmins, but now large shopping complexes and eatries have come out. ALwarpet can also be called as a part and extension of the larger Mylapore area. The Alwarpet area also contains one of the five star hotels, namely The Park Sheraton. There are many shopping centres located on the T.T.K road stretch, which falls within Alwarpet area. There are many music sabhas in and around Alwarpet and the famous "Music academy" is situated as a famous landmark in Alwarpet. Alwarpet is the central hub of inuumerable carnatic music concerts and together with Mylapore can be called as the very cultural centre of Chennai. This is the best locality in Chennai for parents who wish to train their children in clasical music or Vedas or Sanskrit slokas, as many tution classes are conducted in and around Alwarpet and Mylapore locality.
