From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Academy of Religion is the world's largest association of scholars in the field of religious studies and related topics. It was founded in 1909 as the Association of Biblical Instructors in American Colleges and Secondary Schools. The name was changed to National Association of Biblical Instructors in 1933, which was change to its current name in 1963. AAR is closely associated with the Society of Biblical Literature.[1]

The AAR publishes a journal and holds an annual meeting each year in November. Traditionally, this meeting has been held jointly with the Society of Biblical Literature, drawing upon the commonalities of both fields. However, both organizations started holding separate meetings in 2008 and will not hold another joint session until 2011.

The AAR provides awards each year to notable books in the study of religion. It offers three categories of Awards for Excellence: Analytical-Descriptive Studies, Historical Studies, and Constructive-Reflective Studies.
