Eligibility in all other cases is limited to children whose parents or legal guardians hold a foreign passport, are temporarily resident in India and based in New Delhi. The American Embassy School is neither designed nor empowered to serve the needs of Indian students. 39 percent of the school's 1380 students in Pre-School to Grade 12 are Americans, the majority of students represent 53 nationalities. The school director is Dr. Bob Hetzel.
At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, enrollment was 1,142 (PK-grade 5: 581; grades 6-8: 266; and grades 9-12: 295) and there were 122 full-time and 24 part-time faculty members.
The School is governed by a 11-member Board of Governors, elected for 2-year terms by the American Embassy School Association of New Delhi, the sponsor of the School. This group also aims to ensure that the school remains a part of the local community.
The curriculum is that of general academic, college-preparatory public schools. The School's testing program includes the College Board and American College Testing tests. Instruction is in English. French and Spanish are taught as foreign languages. English-as-a-Second-Language is offered for non-English-speaking students. The School also offers the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States and other countries. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
The school includes 2 libraries, 1 swimming pool (plus a diving pool and toddler pool), a physical education center, various computer labs, playgrounds, tennis courts, soccer pitches, and a performing arts center (including a full sized auditorium). Currently a new high school building is undergoing construction to meet to increasing population of A.E.S. This will result in a change of the MS/HS library location as well. The school campus is spread over 12 acres (49,000 m2).
The school operates a number of extracurricular activities, including a wide range of competitive sports and other interests such as chess and climbing. Also the school is extremely good with the sports and are quite the champions in their sports competition called "SAISA". This stands for South Asian Inter School Association.
The school's community goals are also realized through extra activities. The Reach Out program enables students to interact with people from the "jugghi" or slums near the school. In this, the school has helped construct and staff a library, and studying area to promote literacy. The students may also participate in Salaam Delhi, Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity,Operation Smile, and other community services.
The MS/HS Library supports the American Embassy School 's mission statement. It enables and inspires its students to be passionate learners, responsible citizens, and fulfilled individuals, who make well-informed choices in a diverse and dynamic world. Our role is to provide the human and material resources that will enable students and others in the AES community to develop these skills.
It is the library's goal to help all students, staff and parents use all resources and services found in the library to its maximum potential. The vast collection of books (over 30,000 fiction, non fiction and reference), magazines (138) and videos (over 2400) seek to support the instructional and recreational reading/research needs of the school community.
AES has a rich history in producing leaders in the worlds of government, and non-profit. Hollywood actress Uma Thurman also attended the American Embassy School in 1979.[1].
