ANDREW CURRIE JOHNSTONE (1922-1996) Painter and sculptor Andrew Currie Johnstone was born in New York City in 1922.
He studied at the National Academy of Design and Cooper Union and danced professionally for the legendary choreographer Michael Fokine.
He later studied and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University where he was the founder and president of the Society of Arts and Letters.
He received further degrees from Columbia University where he was a member of Mensa and Phi Beta Kappa.
In 1956 he received a Fullbright Scholarship to lecture on art in Scotland and there was introduced to the Queen at Lambeth Castle.
Johnstone was an accomplished painter and sculptor, exhibiting widely during the fifties and sixties.
He traveled around the world gathering inspiration for his artwork.
His abstract expressionist style and attention to color and form readily identify his works.
Johnstone was also an adept sculptor working in stone or wood.
His work has been exhibited at many museums and one man shows around the country including the Everson, Lowe, Springfield, Boston, Berkshire, Munson-Williams-Proctor, and Wadsworth Atheneum.
Andrew’s work is in museum, university and private collections throughout the Northeast.
