Andrew Kernan ( - 12 July2001)
was shot dead by police in Liverpool after an incident in which he was
carrying a samurai sword in the streets. According to
police, he had refused to put down the sword, despite warnings, and
had been threatening officers.
He was a mentally ill at the
time. His mother, who had cared for him for many years, was
prevented by the police from attempting to calm her son, who had
become increasingly agitated by the activities of the
police.
Despite many calls from his family, no one has been
brought to trial. The coroner's court returned a verdict of
lawful
killing.
