Angel of the Presence is the angel that brought the Children of Israel out of Egypt, he is also referred to as "His(God's) Holy Spirit."

Origins

"The Angel of The Presence" is mentioned in several places in the Bible.

An Angel

The word "malakh", or Angel, means messenger. Depending on context, the word can mean any individual which executes the office or role of a messenger (which is the literal meaning), or a created spiritual being attendant on God. The latter understanding came about as description of what angels do.

In Exodus 23:20-22, the Angel of the Presence is to be obeyed, and possesses the right to bless or punish.

20Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.

21Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.

22But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.

The Identity of this Angel

From looking at the other verses we can easily discern the identity of The Presence. Deuteronomy 4:37 tells us 'His Presence' is 'His Mighty Power':

And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them; and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power”-Deut. 4:37

Another clue as to the identity of The Presence is in Isaiah 63:9-10

In all their affliction He was afflicted, The Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity he redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old.-Isaiah 63:9

But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy And he fought against them.-Isaiah 63:10

Cast me not away from Thy Presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.-Psa 51:11

From Deuteronomy 4:37 we know that 'The Presence' is His Mighty Power, and from Isaiah 63:9-10 and Psalms 51:11 we know The Presence is also His Holy Spirit. The Presence of God, or Shekinah, has always been associated with the Holy Spirit, or Ruach HaKodesh. This Sacred Entity is an Angel in the most fundamental meaning of the word, denoting His role as Messenger of God.

Some people suggested that the Angel of the Presence, or the Holy Spirit refers to the angel Gabriel, since Luke 1:11 quotes the angel saying "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God."

However, "standing in the presence of God" is totally different in meaning with "being the Angel of God's Presence".

Revealer of divinity.

The Angel of the Presence stands between the disciple-candidate and the Presencee.

Embodies as much of the available light as the man - at any given moment upon the path of evolution - can use and express

The Solar Angel

"The ray of the mind has a very close relation to the solar angel, and there is a peculiar affiliation between the Angel of the Presence and the mental man. It is this deep seated, though oft unrecognized, interplay and cultivated intercourse, which produces the at-one-ment between the soul and its mechanism, man in the three worlds." - Esoteric Psychology II, AAlice Bailey, p22

The polar opposite of the Dweller on the threshold

3. The ideal of the Soul is seen as being endowed with the ability to create, to control the motion of substance.

This links the disciple finally with the Mother Aspect. the Holy Ghost, or Divine Mind. As he makes a specific contact with this aspect, it will be through the Angel of the Presence. that energy body of Light which houses His overshadowing Christ self.

Here indeed is a concept which contains a great mystery. The Soul is in contact with the substance out of which all forms are made via his own Angel of the Presence. and is therefore enabled to control the motion of substance and so create the forms his service shall take.

The medium of the form building process, which is the Mother aspect - insofar as this planet is concerned - is the Divine Mind. Here the Logoic Will first impresses substance, or intelligence. with His Purpose. and the archetypal forms appear. These archetypal forms are given further substantial body in the world mind (part of the Divine Mind) by those Souls who consciously serve the Plan.

The student at this point makes his contact with that energy which is substance via his receptivity to the Light of his own Angel of the Presence. He aspires to work with that Light to build forms out of it for the betterment of mankind.

He becomes receptive to "that Mind which was in Christ", endeavoring always to make right use of mental substance. This "Mind which was in Christ" he visualizes as the blue-white Light of Christ which permeates his mental body from above. As he is recipient of it, he reciprocates by directing his will to good, and his will to love to the Holy Ghost aspect on Monadic levels via the Angel of the Presence.

The result is an increasing knowledge of the archetypal forms, and hence knowledge of the Divine Plan, plus an ever-increasing ability to mold intelligence into those forms which carry the Divine Plan into outer manifestation.
