Background

After performing a set of promotional shows at The Pearl Concert Theater, rumors circulated in the media of Carey's forthcoming arena tour. In December 2009, the tour was official announced by Carey's official website and Twitter page, under the title "Angels' Advocate Tour".[2][3] The name is linked to a song from her recent album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, "Angels Cry" which will be remixed to feature Ne-Yo and will be released whilst Carey is on tour. This was her first concert tour since her The Adventures of Mimi Tour in 2006. Dates were only slated for the U.S. and Canada.[4] However, Carey was hoping to visit the UK and Australia later this year.

Opening acts

  • New Year's Eve concert: RydaznRtist, Trey Songz, DJ Suss[5]
  • North America: RydaznRtist, DJ Suss

Set list

Changes
  • When the concert officially started on January 15, Carey removed "H.A.T.E.U." and "Always Be My Baby" and replaced them with "Fly Like A Bird" and "Up Out My Face" respectively.
  • From February 4-10, 2010, "It's A Wrap", "Emotions", and "Up Out My Face" were removed from the setlist as Mariah was suffering from a cold. "Emotions" returned at the first Chicago show.
  • "Emotions" was not performed at the second Chicago show along with the typical encore "Hero".
  • "Always Be My Baby" has replaced "Subtle Invitation" since the January 30 show in Boston.
  • On February 9, 2010 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Carey performed "100%", originally intended to be the theme tune for the film 'Precious', in which she also starred in. The performance was filmed for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
  • On February 26, 2010 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Carey performed "H.A.T.E.U." (due to a fan request during the show) in the Encore Section before ending with "Hero". Carey also sang a snippet of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" after "Make it Happen".

Critical Reception

Critical reception to the tour has been generally positive, with most reviewers praising Carey's vocals and the stage production as a whole [23][24]. The set design and set list have also been praised, in particular he mix of Love Hangover/Heartbreaker and her performances of We Belong Together and Hero.[25] Her time keeping has come in for some criticism at certain dates, while others felt that there were too many costume changes throughout the show. [26] In general however, most critics surmised that this tour was better than her The Adventures of Mimi Tour four years earlier and was one of her best tours in quite some time.
