Angus MacDonald was elected a Scottish National Party Councillor to Falkirk Council on 16 December 2004, with 56% of the vote. A former Falkirk District Councillor and Justice of the Peace from 1992 until 1996, he sits on various committees in his role as a councillor. These include Economic Strategy & Development, Education, Housing & Social Care, Investment, Planning, Grangemouth Common Good Fund and Grangemouth Area Forum.

He is also a Governor of the Stirlingshire Educational Trust, Convener of An Comunn Gaidhealach (Falkirk Branch) and Convener of Falkirk & District Gaelic Forum. In addition he was Chairman of the Mod 2008 Falkirk organising committee, co-ordinating plans for the Royal National Mod which ws held in Falkirk district in October 2008. He was re-elected to Falkirk Council at the local elections held on 3 May 2007, which was run using the single transferrable vote system for the first time in Scotland, gaining the most first preference votes of any Grangemouth candidate.
