Types

Animated coffins range from tiny models, for instance 1:20, including a frightful skeleton and a simple flashlight, to expensive lifesize properties.

Features

Lifesize animated coffins are controlled by electronics, which, via pneumatic supply, opens the coffin when people walk by (using a motion detector), or randomly. Advanced even an animator prop for the skeleton.

Components

Usually, but not always, the coffins includes a skeleton, by convention in clothing, often marriage clothing is used¹, and male skeleton characters are prefered. Cobweb and rats are common add-ons, together with UV light and music playback.

Availability

Professionals build these props themselves, others purchase a coffin installation from a specialized company.

Criticism and Safety

Unprepared people may get a heart attack, loose apetite etc. Hence professionals use crime tape, which is available in special halloween versions. This kind of tape is imprinted with Fresh graves, Danger: haunted house etc.
It is common practice not to use mains power supply for animated props, and not to operate the property unattended.
