From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Apollo Theater is a single screen movie theater located in Oberlin, Ohio at 19 East College Street. Opening in 1913, the theater still has many movie palace era elements including the opening and closing of a curtain. The interior of the theater is decorated in art deco style and more modern 'zig zag' style. There are approximately 850 seats.

It is also known for very cheap, first run movies. As of 2003, movies were $3, and $2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

In February 2009 the theater was purchased by College Properties of Oberlin, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oberlin College. The theater was previously owned by twin brothers William and Sandy Steel, who had been looking to sell the theater but had gotten no buyers. Their father, Jerry Steel, had owned the theater since 1928.

Oberlin College is planning renovations for the theater in the summer of 2009. Marvin Krislov, president of Oberlin College, has promised in the short-term to keep many of the theater's hallmarks intact (cheap prices, single screen, decor, and facade).

A "Friends of the Apollo" group has been formed to help future renovations.[1]
