The Aquila Legis is the premier fraternity of the Ateneo de Manila School of Law. It was founded by 21 junior and senior students in 1949, becoming the first fraternity in the Philippines with a Latin name. Aquila Legis in English means "eagle of the law," but is commonly translated as "legal eagle."[1] Through six decades, the fraternity has inducted over 1,500 members, 90 percent of whom are members of the Philippine Bar, cabinet secretaries, lawmakers, justices and ambassadors[2]

Through the years, it has produced over 40 lawyers who reached the Top Ten of the Bar Examinations, four of whom placed number 1.[3]

  • Controversy

Aquila Legis made the headlines in 1991 when it was involved with the death of Leonardo "Lenny" Villa, a neophyte who died because of the hazing in the initiation rites. The officers and members responsible were tried and convicted by the courts for homicide through reckless imprudence. They were later denied admission in the Ateneo Law School which triggered the controversy in the Ateneo de Manila University vs. Capulong (G.R. No. 99327, May 27, 1993) case.

As a requisite to membership, the Aquila Legis, held its initiation rites on February 8, 9 and 10, 1991, for students interested in joining its ranks. As a result of such initiation rites,Villa, a first year student of the university, died of serious physical injuries at Chinese General Hospital on February 10, 1991. He was not the lone victim, though, for another freshman by the name of Bienvenido Marquez was also hospitalized at the Capitol Medical Center for acute renal failure occasioned by the serious physical injuries inflicted upon him on the same occasion."

On September 1, 2007, Gerarda Villa (president of the Crusade Against Violence (CAV), mother of hazing victim Lenny, a neophyte of Aquila Legis, who died 16 years ago), stated that “the sight of the lifeless and battered body of 21-year-old graduating UP senior student Cris Anthony Mendez was one painful déjà vu”. The Court of Appeals’ dismissal of the case is now pending appeal to the Supreme Court.<ref> Inquirer.net, Déjà vu for Lenny Villa’s ma</ref>
