Arasan is a
chess program for
Windows and
Linux. It is copyrighted, but allows free
distribution, with some restrictions.
The latest version is
Arasan 9.5, released in October, 2006. The Windows version runs on
Windows 95 or more recent versions. The Linux version comes in
source only, and requires GCC to build (version 4.0 or greater
recommended).
Arasan has both a native Windows user interface
and a console-based chess engine for use with Winboard or xboard.
Arasan also works with Arena, another free chess interface, and
with UCI-compatible programs like Shredder.
Arasan includes an
opening book with over 75,000 moves.
In the recent The 2006
First Annual ACCA Presidents Tournament, Arasan ended third, behind
world's no. 1 chess program
Rybka and popular free source program
crafty.
(Arasan means "king" in
Tamil, a
language of South India).
