Archiveopteryx is a mail server optimised to support high-volume, long-term archival.
It stores mail in a PostgreSQL database, and provides access to it through IMAP, POP, and a webmail interface.
It seeks to make it practical not only to maintain large archives, but to easily organize, search, and access the archived information on a daily basis, instead of relegating it to offline storage.
Archiveopteryx is available both on commercial terms and as open source.
