U-2 program

.Groom Lake was used for bombing and artillery practice during World War II, but was then abandoned until April 1955, when it was selected by Lockheed's Skunk Works team as the ideal location to test the forthcoming U-2 spy plane.^ In its early days, Area 51 was used to develop the now famous U-2 and SR-71 spy planes.

^ Former workers at the 38,400-acre Groom Lake installation, most of which sits in Lincoln County, have said it is used to test high-tech U.S. aircraft.

[14][15] .The lakebed made an ideal strip from which they could operate the troublesome test aircraft, and the Emigrant Valley's mountain ranges and the NTS perimeter protected the test site from prying eyes and outside interference.^ "The range is used for the testing of technologies and systems and training for operations critical to the effectiveness of U.S. military forces and the security of the United States".

^ At 9:25 the next morning we lay eyes on the Tonopah Test Range, a second classified installation just down the road from Area 51.

^ Unofficially it is an operational testing range for the cutting edge technological developments of America’s armed forces.

.Lockheed constructed a makeshift base at the location, then known as Site II or "The Ranch", consisting of little more than a few shelters, workshops and trailer homes in which to house its small team.^ We head toward the Little A'Le'Inn, a restaurant-shrine to extraterrestrial visitors, located in the nearby town of Rachel (population 65), a huddle of small houses and trailers.

^ New Construction - South Base Ikonos imagery has revealed that this 32 acre facility is a small weapons storage area with three small igloos and two larger igloos.

^ It was so bright, that when he stared at it for more than a few seconds, his eyes hurt.

.In only three months a 5000-foot runway was constructed[14] and was servicable by July 1955. The Ranch received its first U-2 delivery on July 24, 1955 from Burbank on a C-124 Globemaster II cargo plane, accompanied by Lockheed technicians on a Douglas DC-3.^ "It was originally called the Ranch, and it was started by Lockheed in 1955 because they were developing the U-2 spy plane," Paglen says.

^ The 1988 imagery shows a large asphalt plant, that was used to construct the new 11,960 foot runway.

^ On April 20, 1982, Lockheed test pilot Robert Riedenauer was at the controls of that plane when it cartwheeled wing over wing attempting to take off from a Groom Lake runway.

[14] The first U-2 lifted off from Groom on August 4, 1955. A U-2 fleet under the control of the CIA began overflights of Soviet territory by mid-1956.
During this period, the NTS continued to perform a series of atmospheric nuclear explosions. .U-2 operations throughout 1957 were frequently disrupted by the Plumbbob series of atomic tests, which detonated over two-dozen devices at the NTS. The Plumbbob-Hood explosion on July 5 scattered fallout across Groom and forced a temporary evacuation.^ Now the people at Groom Lake say they know when anyone is on the mountain and that these intrusions force them to shut down all of their operations.

The OXCART program

.Even before U-2 development was complete, Lockheed began work on its successor as part of the CIA's OXCART project, involving the A-12, a Mach-3 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft — a later variant of which became the famed USAF SR-71 Blackbird.^ Even before I became involved in the project I was one of the greatest disbelievers on Earth.

.This aircraft flight characteristics and maintenance requirements forced a massive expansion of facilities and runways at Groom Lake in 1960 since the aircraft required an 8000-foot runway and additional infrastructure.^ Former workers at the 38,400-acre Groom Lake installation, most of which sits in Lincoln County, have said it is used to test high-tech U.S. aircraft.

[16] .The main runway was lengthened from 5,000 to 8,500 ft (1,500 to 2,600 m) in autumn 1960.[16] Preparations began for the arrival of OXCART in early 1962: the FAA agreed to close off airspace around Groom Lake, security was greatly enhanced, and the small civilian mine in the Groom basin was closed.^ He says he worked for The Atomic Energy Commission at Groom Lake in the 1960's and claimed he saw an alien disk in flight along with a lot of other detailed information.

^ When they got off the bus he realised he was at the Groom Lake facility.

The facility received eight F-101s for training, two T-33s for proficiency flying, a C-130 for cargo transport, a U-3A for administrative purposes, a helicopter for search and rescue, and a Cessna-180 for liaison use, and Lockheed provided an F-104 chase plane.[16] The first OXCART was covertly trucked to the base in February 1962, assembled, and it made its first flight 26 April 1962. At the time, the base boasted a complement of over 1,000 personnel. It had fueling tanks, a control tower, and a baseball diamond. .Groom saw the first flight of most major Blackbird variants: A-12, the abortive YF-12 interceptor variant, and the D-21 Blackbird-based drone project.^ He says he worked for The Atomic Energy Commission at Groom Lake in the 1960's and claimed he saw an alien disk in flight along with a lot of other detailed information.

^ Merlin and three other sources who worked at the base said base officials wanted to retrieve one of the Have Blue airframes buried somewhere near the Groom Lake installation but were unable to find it.

The SR-71 Blackbird, by contrast, first flew at Palmdale, California in December 1964, and Palmdale and Edwards AFB served as the primary operation sites for that model until Beale Air Force Base became active in early 1966.

Have Blue/F-117 program

.The Lockheed Have Blue prototype stealth fighter (a smaller proof-of-concept model of the F-117 Nighthawk) first flew at Groom in December 1977.[17] Testing of a series of ultra-secret prototypes continued there until mid-1981, when testing transitioned to the initial production of F-117 stealth fighters.^ "We knew there was a stealth fighter.

.The base and its associated runway system have been expanded[18][19] In 1995, the federal government expanded the exclusionary area around the base to include nearby mountains that had hitherto afforded the only decent overlook of the base, prohibiting access to 3,972 acres of land formerly administered by the Bureau of Land Management.^ The Federal Government tests aircraft at Area 51 that they want to keep secret.

Runways

.The base has seven runways including one that now appears to be closed.^ The base boasts one of the world’s longest runways, although the need for this is not clear unless landings from sub-orbital vehicles are necessitated.

The closed runway, 14R/32L, is also by far the longest with a total length of approximately 23,300 feet (7,100 m), not including stopway. .The other runways are two asphalt runways, the 14L/32R with a length of 12,000 feet (3,700 m) and 12/30 with a length of 5,400 feet (1,600 m), and four runways located on the salt lake.^ He saw 8 others that were stored in these hangars built into the side of a mountain at S-4, which is located on Papoose Dry Lake.

^ Fouche also received input from four other SR-71 pilots, two U-2 pilots, a TR-1 pilot, and about two dozen bomber and fighter jocks.

These four runways are 09L/27R and 09R/27L, which are both approximately 11,450 feet (3,490 m), and 03L/21R and 03R/21L, which are both approximately 10,000 feet (3,000 m). The base also has a helipad.[20][21]
.In December 2007, airline pilots noticed that the base had appeared in their aircraft navigation systems' latest Jeppesen database revision with the ICAO airport identifier code of KXTA and listed as "Homey Airport".[22] The probably inadvertent release of the airport data led to advice by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) that student pilots should be explicitly warned about KXTA, not to consider it as a waypoint or destination for any flight even though it now appears in public navigation databases.^ Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 is now available to the public at large.

Although officially declassified, the original film taken by U.S. Corona spy satellite in the 1960s has been altered prior to declassification; in answer to freedom of information queries, the government responds that these exposures (which map to Groom and the entire NAFR) appear to have been destroyed.[31] Terra satellite images (which were publicly available) were removed from web servers (including Microsoft's "Terraserver") in 2004,[32] and from the monochrome 1 m resolution USGS data dump made publicly available. NASA Landsat 7 images are still available (these are used in the NASA World Wind). .Higher resolution (and more recent) images from other satellite imagery providers (including Russian providers and the IKONOS) are commercially available.^ Recently, some very good aerial satellite images of the area have been available through Google Earth , which is an amazing 3D map of Earth that has most areas mapped down to a resolution of just a few thousand feet.

Environmental lawsuit

Area 51 viewed from distant Tikaboo Peak
In 1994, five unnamed civilian contractors and the widows of contractors Walter Kasza and Robert Frost sued the USAF and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. .Their suit, in which they were represented by George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, alleged they had been present when large quantities of unknown chemicals had been burned in open pits and trenches at Groom.^ "It is baffling to see the government continue to cover up what went on at Area 51," said Turley, a George Washington University law professor.

^ Air Force claiming they were exposed to toxic fumes from hazardous waste burned in open pits at the installation, the Air Force issued a statement that has become its boilerplate answer to questions about the installation.

Biopsies taken from the complainants were analyzed by Rutgers University biochemists, who found high levels of dioxin, dibenzofuran, and trichloroethylene in their body fat. The complainants alleged they had sustained skin, liver, and respiratory injuries due to their work at Groom, and that this had contributed to the deaths of Frost and Kasza. The suit sought compensation for the injuries they had sustained, claiming the USAF had illegally handled toxic materials, and that the EPA had failed in its duty to enforce the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (which governs handling of dangerous materials.) .They also sought detailed information about the chemicals to which they were allegedly exposed, hoping this would facilitate the medical treatment of survivors.^ Letters they have written to each other, that I have acquired, clearly state that they hope to take all their information to the movie studio in order to quash this film project.

Congressman Lee H. Hamilton, former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told 60 Minutes reporter Leslie Stahl, "The Air Force is classifying all information about Area 51 in order to protect themselves from a lawsuit."[35]
.Citing the State Secrets Privilege, the government petitioned trial judge U.S. District Judge Philip Pro (of the United States District Court for the District of Nevada in Las Vegas) to disallow disclosure of classified documents or examination of secret witnesses, alleging this would expose classified information and threaten national security.^ Everything else – including the most seemingly mundane facts – is classified in the name of national security.

Consequently, Pro dismissed the suit due to lack of evidence. Turley appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, on the grounds that the government was abusing its power to classify material. Secretary of the Air Force Sheila E. Widnall filed a brief that stated that disclosures of the materials present in the air and water near Groom "can reveal military operational capabilities or the nature and scope of classified operations." The Ninth Circuit rejected Turley's appeal,[37] and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear it, putting an end to the complainants' case.
A closed-circuit TV camera watches over the perimeter of Area 51
The President continues to annually issue a determination continuing the Groom exception.[38][39][40] .This, and similarly tacit wording used in other government communications, is the only formal recognition the U.S. Government has ever given that Groom Lake is more than simply another part of the Nellis complex.^ Former workers at the 38,400-acre Groom Lake installation, most of which sits in Lincoln County, have said it is used to test high-tech U.S. aircraft.

.An unclassified memo on the safe handling of F-117 Nighthawk material was posted on an Air Force website in 2005. 1974 Skylab photography

In January 2006, space historian Dwayne A. Day published an article in online aerospace magazine The Space Review titled "Astronauts and Area 51: the Skylab Incident." The article was based on a memo written in 1974 to CIA director William Colby by an unknown CIA official. The memo reported that astronauts on board Skylab 4 had, as part of a larger program, inadvertently photographed a location of which the memo said:
There were specific instructions not to do this. <redacted> was the only location which had such an instruction.
.Although the name of the location was obscured, the context led Day to believe that the subject was Groom Lake.^ "There is an operating location near Groom dry lake.

As Day noted:
.
[I]n other words, the CIA considered no other spot on Earth to be as sensitive as Groom Lake.^ He says he worked for The Atomic Energy Commission at Groom Lake in the 1960's and claimed he saw an alien disk in flight along with a lot of other detailed information.

^ Not all once-secret planes from Groom Lake that crashed have been buried there, including the first production F-117A, tail No.

[42][43]
The memo details debate between federal agencies regarding whether the images should be classified, with Department of Defense agencies arguing that it should, and NASA and the State Department arguing against classification. The memo itself questions the legality of unclassified images to be retroactively classified.
Remarks on the memo,[44] handwritten apparently by DCI (Director of Central Intelligence) Colby himself, read:
He did raise it—said State Dept. people felt strongly. But he inclined leave decision to me (DCI)—I confessed some question over need to protect since:
  1. USSR has it from own sats
  2. What really does it reveal?
  3. If exposed, don't we just say classified USAF work is done there?
The declassified documents do not disclose the outcome of discussions regarding the Skylab imagery. The behind-the-scenes debate proved moot as the photograph appeared in the federal government's archive of satellite imagery along with the remaining Skylab 4 photographs, with no record of anyone noticing until Day identified it in 2007.[45]

Veterans of experimental projects such as OXCART and NERVA at Area 51 agree that their work (including 2,850 OXCART test flights alone) inadvertently prompted many of the UFO sightings and other rumors:[6]

Portrayal in media and popular culture

Popular culture often portrays Area 51 as a haven for extraterrestrials. .The numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Area 51 have granted it a fairly high profile in popular culture, specifically in the area of science fiction.^ Paglen is steeped in the lore surrounding Area 51, the twin currents of secrecy and weirdness that swirl around the place like powdery desert dust.

^ Everyone has a theory to what the US military are keeping under wraps at Area 51, but few can claim to have gained first hand knowledge from the inside.

^ Area 51 isn't surrounded by a tall, electrified razor wire-topped fence or any other visible barrier.

Dozens of films and television programs deal with fictionalized events at the site. The following is list of such media:
.
  • In the 1996 action film Independence Day, the complex is shown to have been studying the crashed scout ship from the Roswell UFO incident of 1947. The heroes of the film later make their final attack from the airstrips at the base, and in a nod to established fact, Randy Quaid's character Russell Casse at one point refers to the base not being shown on a state map of Nevada.
  • The television series Seven Days took place largely inside the Area 51 complex itself, with the base depicted as being run by a covert National Security Agency (NSA) operation which used a time travel device made possible by alien technology recovered from the 1947 Roswell incident.
  • In the video game Tomb Raider 3, Lara Croft breaks into Area 51. She must find a special stone called "Element 115".
  • Joanna Dark infiltrates Area 51 in the video game Perfect Dark.^ And was stored and studied at a base called Indian Springs, which is near Area 51.

^ He points to the outburst of West Virginia senator Jay Rockefeller, who in late 2004 publicly shredded an unnamed covert R&D effort, describing it as "totally unjustified and very wasteful and dangerous to national security."

.Her objectives are to meet up with a fellow secret agent, find the autopsy lab of the assumed to be dead alien codenamed "Elvis", and to get out successfully.
  • In the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, "Hangar 51" is revealed to be the location of the government warehouse where the Ark of the Covenant was stored at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and where KGB agents go to recover the remains of the Roswell alien, eventually revealed to be an interdimensional being with a crystalline skeleton.^ That he's a secret agent for the government.

^ For them, Area 51 is the focus of fevered, conspiratorial speculation, a remote and incredibly well-guarded location where the government has hidden a fleet of alien spacecraft.

^ The Area 51 story, I think, shares a common ancestry with one of the best documented and most widely accepted premises in all of ufology, namely the premise that alien hardware has been recovered or otherwise acquired by the U.S. government and/or military.

.Writer David Koepp acknowledged the number 51 as a reference to popular beliefs about the connection between Roswell and Area 51.[50]
  • In the television series Stargate SG-1, Area 51 is used as a facility for storage and research of extraterrestrial technology brought back to Earth from other planets.
  • In the episode "Knight to King's Pawn" of the revived Knight Rider series on NBC, Michael Knight infiltrates a storage facility at Area 51, to recover KITT, after it was taken away by NSA agents.
  • In the Metal Gear series, Area 51 turns out to be one of the headquarters of the group known as The Patriots, who manipulate all aspects of the world from behind the scenes.
  • In the comic Superman: Red Son, Abin Sur's body is stored in Area 51 by order of J. Edgar Hoover.^ And that some of that material had been taken to Area 51.

  • A video game was released by Midway Games in 2005, called Area 51.
  • The title of William Shatner's 2002 film Groom Lake refers to Area 51, and the movie's plot centers around Area 51.
  • The Las Vegas 51s, a minor-league baseball team in the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, take their name from Area 51. Their team logo and cap depict one of the grey aliens thought by UFO believers to inhabit the base.
