Argentum Online is a
MMORPG fantasy
videogame.
It is
free software/
open source, also free as in
free beer, and is programmed in
Visual Basic.
It is called
Online because to play you
It was developed by Pablo Marquez, aka Gulfas Morgolock, in
2000, when the first public version of the game was published.
There are many servers of the game in
Argentina and some in
Spain.
As it is a free software project, there has been many changes to the game that provided new features.
The game
The game is quite simple, though complex; it takes place in a fantasy world called
Argentum, with various zones like
forests,
mountains,
rivers,
seas,
cities and even dungeons.
A character can have different professions (Fishermen, Carpenter, Craftsman, Mage, Warrior, Druid, etc...), Races (Human, Elf, Dark Elf, Gnome, 'Little-Man'), Hometown (Ullathorpe, Nix, Banderbill, Lindos), initial skills (up to 21 to play with, with a maximum of 100 points each: Armed combat, Magic, Meditation, Fishing, Lumberjack, Carpentry, Defense with Shield, Sailing, Commerce, etc...) and of course, a Name and a Gender.
Indeed is an online Role Playing game, but a very particular one.
Discarding the fact it has old-like graphics (though the development team is taking action on such problems), the playability is unique and the possibilities are never-seen.
Playing
Unlike most MMORPGs, most of Quests done are set up by the own player.
An adventure starts when a loner or a group of friends decide to travel to gather experience on further and deeper areas of Argentum.
Death indeed means dying, your body is left behind with all your items and possessions, except what you previously have stored at your vault and bank account.
You are turned into a ghost, forced to go all the way back to the closest city, find a Church and be resuscitated by the local Priest.
The fun is over when the strongest beat you, and is a slap in a face to remember fantasy world can be cruel too, which makes you feel danger almost like in real world, about to be loosing all you've gathered.
Restrictions
Levels do not limit equipment usage nor wizard skills.
Though, it would be quite imprudent at Argentum since it's characteristics to go outside safe area with expensive equipment and low level (which means you have less attack and defense, you haven't grow enough).
The trip may end quite soon as a criminal may kill you to gain your possesions.
Equipments have no restrictions, but spells do which is Magic skill.
You will need advanced knowledge on magic in order to use more important skills (such as Immobilize, Invisibility, Hunger, Magic Misile, Thunder Storm and - the magicians top attack method - Apocalipsis.
There are many other spells to learn).
For using a boat and sail to new horizons, islands and better training places, you will need high sailing skills in order to adventure yourself to the high seas.
Pirates, though, need less skills and are able to use more defensive though expensive ships.
Carpenters have limits as the Blacksmiths, they both require to perfect their skills in order to make more important weapons, armors, various items or furniture to place at houses.
A world that works
As in any MMORPG, there are NPCs (Non Playable Characters) controlled by the server that sell many items to the citizens and criminals of Argentum.
Still, some others can and/or must be built to be obtained.
A particular case is the sailing boat, which is done by a Carpenter and price goes around 30000 gold coins, set completely by users and the demand/supply factors.
Miners often sell Blacksmiths resources for him/her to produce items; resources like Iron, Plate and Gold, obtained in dungeons.
These resources are not available at stores either.
The Empire
As there's no MMORPG without some blood, Argentum is a very intensive and demanding game when combating alone or with a group, clan or faction members, and is highly recognized by such feature, unlike Lineage 2, MU or others more popular games internationally.
Citizens are normal users which respect the empire's rules, some are high class members belonging to the Royal Troops (Armadas Reales) who protect the citizens and peace in the Empire.
Also, there are Neutrals, most of times criminals but do not attack randomly to any citizen or criminal..
This kind of players set their own rules and live for their own freedon.
And finally, Criminals which attack Empire's protected creatures, citizens and NPC guardians at cities.
They also have a special force called the Dark Legion (Legión Oscura) which mission is opposite to the Royal Troops: kill every citizen at sight.
Both factions, Royal Troops and Dark Legion, have their own rankings which must and are respected within members of it.
Sometimes big battles are started in order to decide who will rule each city (a legendary fight at Arghäl city in which most Citizens and Criminals fought for, gave the second named the lordship of it and for a long while it has been a Criminals-only city.
A terrible lost for the Empire).
