The
Argo is a fictional
airship in the First Earth
series.
The Argo is used as a
mobile crane and work platform by the
crew of the
Ferrgopacus. It is
mentioned that it was named after a boat that made a great voyage,
suggesting
Jason and the
Argonauts.
History
The Argo is described as first being
built as a work platform/mobile crane in 1867 when the
Ferrgopacus reached a size that made it tricky to manuver
in tight places.
Argo was also to be used as an excursion
boat when it was not neccesary for the
Ferrgopacus to be
used. It preformed admiribly and soon provide to be a vital adition
to the machien roster of the
Ferrgopacus, most notably
when it was used to lift heavy anchors and chains over enemy ships
then drop them, thous pinning them in place long enough for the
Ferrgopacus to be repaired and for ally ships to arive.
The
Argo was presummed lost when in 2001 its landing dock
collapsed under heavy enemy fire. It was not in steam at the time
and so plummeted. Rather then falling overboard, however, it fell
down into Captain Cassis' bedroom after falling through a hold.
After the wreckge of the dock was cleaned away it was not noticed
as it had fallen behind a pile of junk Cassis used to make new
equipment for the
Ferrgopacus. Construction began on a
larger and improved airship,
Argo 2, in Ferreck town to
replace the origanal
Argo. Four weeks later Cassis
descovered the
Argo and it was quickly put back into full
working order, Fred, the First Mate, commented "I told you it could
happen." refering to an earlier comment of how Cassis' room was
such a mess that an airship could be lost in there. With the
Argo 2 being built it is noted by many characters that the
Argo's days as a working horse may be
numbered.
Trivia
A postcard of the Argo lined
with Christmas lights and lowering a large star decoration on top
of a giant Christmas tree is described as being a sight seen in
Sura every Christmas since it was first built.
