Rabbi
Ariel S. Sokolovsky (born
January 4,
1980) is a
Kishinev,
Moldova born
Chabad activist, now based in
Portland, Oregon
who is most notable for explicitly stating that the late
Menachem Mendel Schneerson is
God incarnate. He emigrated to
the
United
States in
1993.
He runs
activities in the Portland area and maintains a number of blogs and
websites in which he expresses his views. He has been interviewed
for a number of publications about his views in recent years.
In
an article in
Haaretz he
is quoted as implying that he is not alone in the view that
Schneerson is God. His views have been widely criticised by other
Chabad activists and Rabbis, some of whom have tried to distance
themselves from him.
He is also notable for advocating the
renewal of the ability of men to have
concubines as biblical law allows. He has
also set up a concubine dating website called "Pilegesh
Personals".
Following the wide dissemination of his views the
primary Chabad chapter in Portland issued a statement publicly
dissociating themselves from Sokolowsky.
[287] Sokolovsky responded by claiming
that they had welcomed him many times and honored him in their
synagogue.
