Aristo Sham (Chinese: 沈靖韜) (born 12 March 1996) is a young classical pianist and child prodigy born in Hong Kong. He has won numerous prizes and awards in Hong Kong and overseas, and has performed in several countries.

Biography

Born in 1996, Aristo Sham is an eighth grader of Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong. He started playing piano when he was three years old. He joined the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as junior piano student in 2002 and he is now under the tutelage of Professor Eleanor Wong.

Aristo has won a number of international and national prizes: the First Prize of the Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition in 2008[1]; First Prize of the 4th China National Junior Piano Competition; the First Prize of Category A and the Barenreiter Urtext Special Prize of the 10th Ettlingen International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Germany in 2006[2]; the Grand Champion of the Hong Kong Young Musician of the Year 2006[3]; the First Prize in Group A of the 69th Steinway International Children and Youth Piano Competition in Beijing and the Gold Medal Award of Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2008.

Aristo has collaborated with Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra in 2004, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007 and the Orchestra at Temple Square in Utah in 2009. He also joined the Shanghai and Hangzhou concert tour with the Junior Chamber Orchestra of the Academy for Performing Arts as soloist in 2005. He has held recitals in Hong Kong, China and Singapore. Moreover, in 2009 he was invited to play a recital in the series of Prodigies and Masters of Tomorrow of the Miami Piano Festival in Miami[4]. He has recently been featured in the Channel 4 programme, The World's Greatest Musical Prodigies[5].

Aristo has written various works for piano solo, ensembles and computer music. He is currently studying Composition and Computer Music Technology with Dr. Maurice Poon in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. With his own composition 3X, he was awarded the First Prize in the category of Original Composition for Western Instruments of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival 2006. This piece had been performed in concerts and broadcasted at radio stations.

Aristo was presented the Certificate of Commendation by the Hong Kong Government for outstanding achievements in international arts and cultural activities. The "2007 Young Artist Award" and "2008 Hong Kong Outstanding Teens Award" were bestowed on Aristo.
