Several GLA armoured units in
Zero
Hour
This page lists the armoured units of the Global Liberation Army
(GLA) in the
real-time strategy PC game
Command
& Conquer: Gnerals and its expansion pack
Zero
Hour. The GLA may retrive additional upgrades to these
vehicals by salvaging equipment from destroyed vehicals, which
creates new and exotic weaponry for these units. All GLA vehicals
can also be equiped with junk repair, which allows them to self
heal even if they are not elite.
Combat Vehicals
These are
GLA vehicals designed to engage in combat with enemy forces. All of
these vehicals mount some sort of weapon, and are capable of
conducting offensive of defensive
operations.
Technical
Based on the real-life
technicals that are frequently
seen in use in troubled areas, this unit is essentially a pickup
truck with a
.50 BMG
heavy
machine gun mounted in the bed. It is effective as an
anti-personnel platform, but also serves as an infantry transport.
The weapon can be upgraded to a
recoilless rifle, and later an an
RPG launcher by salvaging material
from the field. When equipped with the RPG launcher the technical
is effective against lightly-armoured threats. This unit is one of
the fastest GLA ground vehicles.
Rocket Buggy
The rocket
buggy is a large lightly-armoured
dune buggy equipped with a
turret-mounted three-pod
multiple rocket launcher system,
which can be upgraded to five pods. The rockets themselves are
fired directly at the target instead of in an overhead arc as is
the case with normal
rocket artillery, making it possible for
them to be intercepted by hitting obstacles in the way.
Additionally, as the rockets have a limited onboard
guidance system, the
buggy can launch its barrage while on the move. Finally, the
rockets themselves can be upgraded with
armour-piercing warheads to better deal with
defensive features on enemy assets. This unit is effective against
armoured units such as tanks, but most players use this unit in a
base-assault role: the buggy is capable of engaging base defences
from outside their range, which makes a massed barrage particularly
devastating.
If the player elects not to spend a General's
Point for the ability to build Scud Launchers, the rocket buggy
becomes his only option for artillery.
Toxin
Tractor
Essentially what appears to be an armoured
John Deere farm
tractor fitted with a chemical
sprayer, the toxin tractor is a slow-moving vehicle that engages
enemy units and structures by firing a deadly stream of
toxins at the target. This
unit is devastating against enemy infantry, and can rapidly clear a
garrisoned structure. Although a powerful anti-infantry weapon, the
toxin tractor is vunerable to systems that can easily deal with
vehicles, such as tanks and enemy aircraft. This unit can upgrade
itself with battlefield salvage in
Zero Hour, and
the weapon can be upgraded to use stronger variants of the
anthrax toxin.
When
ordered to, the tractor can switch to an alternate mode, in which
it continuously sprays the toxin stream as a heavy mist that
settles on the ground around the tractor. The resulting
contamination is so severe that it kills infantry trying to move
across it.
Quad Cannon
This lightly-armoured
half-track's
turret-mounted
AA system sports four powerful
autocannons, and
in spite of its name can also engage ground targets. Its immense
rate of fire
allows even the basic loadout to shred through aircraft, infantry
and lightly-armoured vehicles with incredible ease. The unit can
use battlefield salvage to considerably enlarge the gun, increasing
its firing rate and damage even further. When coupled with higher
experience states and purchased upgrades, the Quad Cannon can even
tear apart tanks and buildings in seconds.
Of note is the fact
that American
countermeasure system upgrades for aircraft
are useless against the Quad Cannon; they only work against
surface-to-air missiles.
Bomb
Truck
The
bomb
truck is a large
dump truck whose bed has been loaded with
explosives. This unit attacks by driving straight into a target,
then detonating. Each one can be individually upgraded with two
extra enhancements, a
high-explosive bomb and/or an anthrax toxin bomb. The first upgrade
doubles the damage of the vehicle, the second will take care of
most units that manage to survive the initial blast. Merely
purchasing the Bio-bomb upgrade alone results in a green tarp with
the curious words "U DIE".
The bomb truck can disguise itself to
literally look like any vehicle at its full-scale, including
neutral ones and those of the enemy. This can often be used to
hilarious effect, creating the impression of battleships moving on
land, whole trains moving independantly of the railroad, and so
on.
Scorpion Tank
A light tank with fast speed and
respectable firepower, the scorpion tank forms the bulk of any GLA
armoured strike column. These tanks can be upgraded to fire
toxin-dispersing shells, and have a useful rocket attack. The toxin
shells makes it somewhat more effective against enemy infantry, and
the rockets make this vehicle very effective in tank fights and
when destroying enemy structures. This tank can use salvaged parts
to upgrade its missile launch system, allowing the unit to fire two
missiles at a time.
Attack Cycle
Exclusive to
Zero
Hour, the attack cycle is an off-road
motorcycle that adapts its
weapon to fit that of the rider. When created they come with a
rebel and fires either a machine gun or rockets, but other units
such as RPG troopers can also ride them. These vehicles can drive
over any obstacle on the map except water, making them good for
ambushes and surprise assaults. When equipped with terrorists these
bike become suicide vehicles which drive to their intended target
and detonate.
Marauder Tank
The marauder tank is a more
powerful version of the scorpion tank. This tank can only be
acquired through the expenditure of a General's Point, but once
obtained the mararder tank can be built for the remainder of the
mission. Marauder tanks are slower and more heavily-armoured, and
can use battlefield scrap to improve itself, eventually acquiring a
powerful twin-cannon mount. The turret is fixed forward, so the
entire vehicle must move in order to fire upon a target.
Scud
Launcher
The GLA have a large supply of
Soviet-era
Scud-type
ballistic missiles for use as
artillery against both the US and China. Launching these missiles
is the responsibility of the Scud Launcher, an eight-wheeled
transporter erector launcher.
Scud Launchers are a non-buildable unit, necessitating the
expenditure of a General's Point for construction. Scud Launchers
may arm one of two warheads: High explosive or biological. The unit
is very weak by itself, and usually travels with
protection.
Bomber
As the sole aircraft in the GLA
repertoire, the
bomber's
only purpose is to deliver the GLA anthrax bomb to its target. The
bomber itself appears to be a badly-outdated
propeller-driven design that
looks like it could be traced all the way back to
World War II. Further
reinforcing the notion that the bomber is of a bygone era, its four
engines make considerable amounts of noise and belch thick streams
of black smoke.
Non-combat units
These vehicles are unarmed
and cannot engage in combat, but are nonetheless
important.
Radar Van
A non-combat unit, the radar van
provides the GLA with radar for free. Their secondary role entails
detecting stealth units and booby traps. These vehicles can be
upgraded to allow them to scan a small portion of terrain for items
hidden from normal view.
