Art Houston (Aug.
24, 1952- ) is a Philadlephia based actor, voice over announcer, and Realtor.
He is the oldest son of Martha and Herbert Houston.
Art's father came to America from Canada after WWII, having served in both the RCMP and RCAF.
Raised in Phoenixville and nearby Pottstown Pennsylvania, Art was educated at Kimberton Farms School, Valley Forge Military Academy and New York University, along with several smaller schools.
Art Houston grew up in the same small Pennsylvania town as Producer
Todd Hallowell and singer
Daryl Hall,
Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
Art first appeared on radio in 1971 as a principal actor on the NBC Radio Network, performing as the only source of dozens of character voices in the radio drama "Trail of Tears, a Conflict of Cultures," produced by Stuart Lilker.
This was significant as it was one of the last radio dramas sent out over a radio network in the United States in the 20th century.
Having listened to alternative radio outlets like WMMR 93.3 and WDAS 105.3 in the late 1960's, Art began producing the Gene Shay folk music program on WMMR in Philadlephia in 1976, moving to WIOQ with Gene (Ivan Shaner) in January of 1978.
Art also produced and later was named host of "Relax for Survival," a New Age radio program that focused on guided meditation, and which was the first of its kind on the east coast and in the world, and aired on WXPN at the University of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1982.
In 1981, Art followed the work of the many disc jockeys he listened to as a child, inluding
Cousin Brucie (
Bruce Morrow, from WABC in New York) and
Jim O'Brien of WFIL radio in Philadlephia ("famous 56") when he took a job at a Trenton NJ station (WKXW 101.5) that employed the legenday "Hy Lit," where his son Sam Lit was the program director.
Following his brief homage to top forty radio, Art began a six-year stint at 94 WYSP in Philadlephia, which brought unexpected contact with
Ed Sciaky,
Wolfman Jack and a host of rock royalty, including
Yes,
Genesis,
Dave Mason,
Tom Petty,
Robert Palmer,
Billy Joel,
Jackson Browne,
The Pretenders,
Iron Maiden, and
Metallica.
As the musical knowlege of on-air announcers was slowly replaced by playlists and automated (voice-tracked) radio, Art struck out into other areas.
After becoming bored with a short-lived easy-listening format ("KISS 100") in 1990, Art left scheduled broadcasting and worked as an master auto technician, Learjet pilot, and college teacher.
Laid off from his job of flying celebrities like
Henry Kissinger,
Madeleine Albright,
Danny DeVito,
Tony Snow, and
John McEnroe Art decided to return to his love of voices and acting, and studied under actor and writer
Mike Lemon and actress
Diane Heery in Philadlephia.
Today, Art Houston sells real estate in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and continues to act in independent films, industrials, ministry videos, and commercials.
