"Asking for It" is a song by alternative rock band Hole, released on the band's major label debut, Live Through This in 1994. The song is a notable track from the band as it was not released as a single, yet it made a brief, four week appearance on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in February 1995, peaking at number 36.[1]
The song was recorded as part of Hole's Live Through This sessions in October 1993 at Triclops Studios in Atlanta. On October 18, halfway through the sessions, frontwoman Courtney Love's husband, Kurt Cobain joined the band in-studio and provided backing vocals on a number of songs, most notably "Asking For It". Cobain, however, was unfamiliar with the material, and was encouraged to "just sing off the top of [his] head."[2]
An alternate mix of the song, sourced from a radio broadcast of Hot Modern Rock Tracks, was circulated in 1998 and feature Cobain's prominent backing, as well as an extended bridge and additional verses, all of which feature Cobain's vocals, though his vocals are still heard on the official version, but aren't as strong.[3] Due to this, the song is known for being a source for those who believe Cobain contributed largely to the album.[4]
The title of the song is also referenced in the band's follow-up EP, Ask for it, and the lyrics make reference to the title of the Live Through This, most notably: "if you live through this with me / I swear that I will die for you."
