About ASG
According to the home page of the Associated Student Government the, <blockquote>
"Associated Student Government is the official voice of the students of Texas State.
ASG is a governing and advocacy body that answers to the student body at large.
ASG has worked for years to address the problems and concerns of its peers.
Members of ASG work closely with faculty, administrators, city leaders, and state officials to advance the collective cause of Texas State students."<ref>1</ref></blockquote>
History
The history of the Associated Student Government at Texas State University is one rich with tradition and energy.
For example, a previous ASG administration was the primary force in the move that saw the rebranding of Southwest Texas to Texas State University.
Likewise, a previous ASG administration also ensured that ASG will provide for posterity by offering $250,000 in scholarships to assist in buying books and in doing so relieve a strong burden in many students lives.
ASG Constitution
The ASG Constitution creates the most basic framework that governs how ASG operates.
The constitution begins with the preamble:
<blockquote>We, the students of Texas State University-San Marcos, subject to the approval and
authority of the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System, do ordain and
establish this Constitution for the Associated Student Government of Texas State University, in
order to represent and serve the student body of Texas State, to unite more closely the
interests of the students, faculty, and administration, and to obtain a meaningful learning
experience for future leadership in a democratic society.<ref>3</ref></blockquote
Executive Agenda
From the 2007-2008 Executive Agenda:
<blockquote>
"We write this so you can hold us to our promises.
Often, in any government, politicians will say and do things that lend the illusion of
progress.
Instead of badly needed results all that is offered is nice neutral words and little
else.
This year at ASG we hope to break that cycle.
We want you to have this and
check it frequently.
If we aren’t living up to what is in this agenda we hope to hear
about it.
If we are failing in our responsibilities we hope you let us know.
If you don’t
like what we are doing please come to our office and give us a piece of your mind.
The
Associated Student Government of Texas State University does not belong to any of us
currently occupying the office.
Instead, it belongs to all of you; the nearly 30,000 undergraduate
and graduate students that depend on this institution for an education, food
and shelter; who pay tuition and fees.
This is your government.
We know that we have been blessed with a great job representing all of you, and we
know it is a temporary position as well.
We have one year to make our mark and represent
your wishes and interests to the administration and beyond.
Hopefully we can
leave ASG better than we found it.
Hopefully we can earn your trust every day.
In this
effort all we ask is that you work with us.
Let us help you.
Our door is always open.
We look forward to this being a great year to be a Bobcat!"<ref>2</ref></blockquote>
