AustNet or austnet is an IRC network which aims to provide a friendly and secure alternative to other IRC networks such as DALnet and EFNet. Launched in September 1996 by Ryan Mills and Roger Yerramsetti, it was initially intended to provide an independent Australian IRC network. It now has servers located in Australia and the United States.

About

AustNet feature their own service system and IRCD called Austhex, designed by the AustNet Development Team. It uses ChanOP (Channel Registration) and NickOP (Nickname Registration) services. A link to the project is listed in External Links. Austnet takes pride in knowing it has fewer netsplits than other networks. All this is due to the hard work of its COO, Oneyed, who spends as much time as he can between coming from from school and doing homework to keep the Austnet servers up and running reliably.

Austnet Split

February 12th 2007 saw a major split within AustNet with many of the Administrators, IRCop's and Servers moving to a forked network called AustIRC.

This network keeps editing this page, obviously an attempt to hide their hijacking attempts. Kwahraw, the person whom currently runs and controls this other network and its services, squit and juped a major hub on AustNet and also quit services, before bringing his own on board. I wonder why he keeps removing that information from here?

Clearly they have something to hide, also pretending to BE AustNet, which isn't very nice now, is it?

Some people using both AustNet and AustIRC have reported having channels suspended on AustNet which contain links to the new network. Austnet claim that this in accordance with their anti-spam policy, however others have viewed this as an attempt by Austnet to stifle the growth of the forked network. Furthermore it is widely reported that channels that even refer to the issue are having their channel topic locked permanently with Austnet ops refusing to unlock them after being asked.

AustNet has recently upgraded their services and IRCd to support channel and usermodes R, which only allow registered and identified nicknames to join and talk in those channels. Contrary to all the rumours going around, this was to be implemented 2-3 years ago, only, they didn't have the resources to modify services.
