The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) was founded in 1964 as an umbrella group for various Islamic groups or councils, and is considered Australia's most important Islamic organisation. The 9 member organisations of AFIC are:

  • the Muslim Council of NSW,
  • the Islamic Council of Victoria,
  • the Islamic Council of Queensland,
  • the Islamic Council Western Australia,
  • the Islamic Council SA,
  • the Islamic Council ACT,
  • the Islamic Council of Tasmania,
  • Christmas Islands Islamic Council and
  • Northern Territory Islamic Council.[2]

Recent events

The group has been suffering from internal turmoil in 2006 with elections replacing seven of an eight person executive council[1] and the council has been reported to have backed away from a promise to tackle hardline Muslim clerics and crack down on extremist ideologies.[3][4]

As of 17 May 2006, enquiry has been sought by Australian police into allegations by the AFIC treasurer Ikebal Patel that corruption is rife amongst AFIC, including fraudulent access to funds, software and data piracy, sexual harassment, pornography and other illegalities.[5]
