John Boyle O'Reilly
(1844–1890)
See biography, media, quotes, indexes. An Irish-born poet and novelist who, as a youth in Ireland, was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. As he was also a soldier enlisted in the British army at the time, he was tried for treason and found guilty. Due to his extreme youth, he was not sentenced to death, but rather was transported to Western Australia. He later escaped to the United States, settling in Boston, where he won fame as a poet, novelist and journalist.
