Autism Initiatives UK is a
charity that was established in 1972.
Pat Minshull had a son, Peter, with autism and was concerned about the lack of specialised help available.
Following an extensive fundraising campaign, Peterhouse School was established in Southport.
By 1985 the charity had developed further and a separate provision, Petersfield Autistic Community, was established in Crosby, catering for young adults.
Since then, the organisation has continued to expand as it has continued to respond to the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families.
It is recognised that the prevalence of autism has increased dramatically and they have responded to the increased need and are now a charity with an acclaimed national reputation for leading the way in supporting people with
autism spectrum disorders.
They now provide direct support to over 200 people in over 40 locations throughout the north of England, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
During the next year they will be also developing innovative services in Southern Ireland and Wales.
They are well-known on the Wirral and Merseyside.
They run a respite home on Barnsbury Road in Walton Liverpool, one in
Southport, and a
day centre that has been branded under various names since 1991 in
Seaforth near
Litherland.
