Autonomous warfare is the theoretical state in which pre-programmed computerized weapons systems automatically respond to threats to the state they protect without human commands - although human beings may still make political or even strategic and operational decisions.

Serious doubts have arisen as to whether this state of warfare will ever be reached, and many have speculated that it is singularly undesirable.

Autonomous warfare systems have turned on humans in scifi works such as the Terminator trilogy (and its related books).
