Avui is a catalan language daily newspaper, based in Barcelona, Catalonia. It is one of the city's newest papers, having been founded in 1976, for the prohibition of the catalan language in Spain till the death of Francisco Franco. "Avui" means "Today" in catalan . The editorial line is generally catalan nationalist (but can mainly be considered supporter of independence as well).

History

The newspaper was founded on April 23, 1976, (Saint George's day). It initially relied on the subscriptions of thousands of Catalans for financial support. It is the most widely sold Catalan language newspaper (ahead of El punt), with a circulation of more than 40 000 a day.
