The BBWF
Also
known as the Beanie Baby Wrestling Federation. The BBWF is a
wrestling company that was founded on Easter 1997 by owners
Shawn Massak
and younger brother
Eric Massak. This company has grown greatly to
over 200 wrestlers spread amongst 3 brands. The following data is
from a magazine article about the BBWF titled "An Interview with
the Crew: a Retrospective of the BBWF, by Ryan Alabaster."
The
Early Days
The Early Days of the BBWF consisted of the foundation
of the company by the Originals:
Bongo,
Congo,
Spike,
Doby,
Blacky, and
Lizzie. The flagship title of the BBWF, the
Universe
Title was formed and won by Bongo. The matches of the BBWF were
held in uptown Massachusetts Avenue in a small compound called "The
Bedroom". Some matches were held on solid ground while others were
held on "The Bunk", a double-decker wrestling ring. Soon over
twenty wrestlers were in the company, and actual competition and
feuds were formed. Record keeping was poor and the few recorded
results were lost.
The Low Middle Ages
The low middle ages saw
the formation of the XKABB (Xtreme Kick Ass Beanie Babies, a more
hardcore oriented federation) by Shawn Massak. It was during this
time that hardcore legends rose to fame such as
Kuku,
Smoochy,
Ants,
Bizkut, and
Ringo. The
BBWF Intercontinental Title was
formed and was won by Tuffy in a
Royal Rumble Match. During this time the
Hardcore Match was created by XKABB and eventually all matches in
both federations became hardcore style. No holds barred matches
became popular and extreme moves were widespread such as Bongo or
Smoochy jumping off the top of the Bunk several feet onto the Floor
into people through glass and steel. The Metalheads (Fortune,
Curly, Valentino, and Peace) were the first real stable to be
formed. Their antics were widespread and their music was “we’re not
gonna take it” and they would bring a large, light green, vinyl
couch to the ring for each match. Also a Hardocre title was made
and adopted WWE’s 24/7 rule. Several competitors could be involved
in the match and the title would change several times in one
night.
The High Middle Ages
The High Middle Ages were brought
upon by the birth of Kyle, the youngest of the brothers. The
“Bedroom” became a home to this new child and the venue for XKABB
and BBWF was moved downtown to an area known as “The Basement”.
This new venue was significantly larger than the Bedroom. The Bunk
was no longer used due to the move and due to injuries from falling
off the top ring. This move brought on a Renaissance for the BBWF
such as the creation of the
BBWF CD Volume 1. New non-Ty Beanies were
brought in and influenced the business for years to come. Some of
these new wrestlers consisted of Marvin the referee,
DK,
King Louie,
The Codfather,
The Bammers, The Blink 182 mascot
Giraffe,
Gabumon, and
Really
Really Big Monkey. A new president was elected, Chow Yun Phat,
who replaced Bongo. Chow Yun Phat created his own championship the
CYP Title which was won by Quackers in a tournament. Commentator
positions were created such as the lovable
Tonny Schiavone and
The Butches. Several feuds ensued such as DK vs. Bushy, Bongo vs.
The Codfather, and Giraffe vs. Louie. Two bi-yearly pay-per-views
were made, BeanieMania and Christmas Chaos. Christmas Chaos
introduced the first-ever
Christmas Tree Match. Beaniemania 2000
was arguably the most decorated BBWF event, and took place uptown
at “The Living Space’’, and the ring was replaced by an oversized
ball pit that was removed of spherical items so matches could
happen. The end of the high middle ages was marked with the
introduction of
Bananas
and
Trixter.
The
Gilded Age
Trixter and Bananas received a huge push upon their
arrival which immediately brought them to contendership status. The
duo took on several heels and soon Bananas challenged the Codfather
for the Universe Title. The feud would lead to some of the most
grueling physical matches ever seen in the BBWF. Trixter challenged
Gabumon for the CYP Title. Trixter would go on to win the title by
delivering a double-arm DDT off a 4-foot platform. Trixter,
Bananas, RRBM, and Giraffe would align to take on and defeat the
Meanies and Codfather at BeanieMania. Trixter and Bananas took on
several heels during the Gilded Age, but also took on several
swiftly raising stars such as DK and Bushy. The arrival of
championship worthy wrestlers slowed and Trixter, Bananas, and
their brother Kyle Monkey stood atop the wrestling world. XKABB and
BBWF slowly formed one federation and the BBWF became stable. Yet
despite this the BBWF would go on hiatus and regular events slowed
down.
Return and the Modern Age
Soon BBWF resumed its natural
flow and certain changes came to be.
Ralph and the Ralphinators
arrived on the scene and make a mockery of life itself. Christmas
Chaos and BeanieMania came back into swing. Trixter began to rise
higher than ever as a singles star and won a Food in the Fridge
Match guaranteeing him a title shot at anytime. At BeanieMania ’06,
the main event consisted of an all or nothing title match between
DK (Universe), Congo (Hardcore), and Smoochy (CYP). DK would go on
to win this match and held all 3 titles for several months. The
XKABB would be reformed and was run by
Jed who Ain’t Got No Legs
and the BBWF was handed over to Tonny Schiavone. Normally this
would be a promotion for Tonny but due to a contract clause he
received a pay-cut (from $0 a year to -$18 a year) and was forced
to continue his job as commentator. DK was forced to defend all 3
of his titles, in an attempt to gain some titles for XKABB. He
fought underdog
Slayer
(XKABB’s representative) in the first match and DK lost due to a
schoolboy. DK then fought Bananas (XKABB’s representative) for the
Hardcore Title (which became the XKABB world title). DK then
defeated Louie to retain the Universe Title. At “Standing on the
Edge of Summer” Bananas fought Ringo to a no-contest, and DK
retained his title in a 10-Man Cage Match, but was then defeated by
Trixter (by cashing in the Food in the Fridge) who made a nearly
unconscious DK submit to win his first Universe Title. Around this
time Kyle Massak became a leader of the BBWF while Shawn was at
college. The AABB was formed which gave Beanies who never got a
chance on BBWF to hold titles and compete. The border between XKABB
and BBWF began to diminish once again as several non-title
inter-promotional matches occurred. New match types are being
tested and Tonny Schiavone has announced a tri-brand pay-per-view
Autumnal Convergence in which all
titles are on the line, each in a different type of
match.
