The
100 Hour Board is a student organization at
Brigham Young University (BYU). The
100 Hour Board gets its name from its purpose: to answer any
question within 100 hours.
BYU students and non-students alike
can ask almost any question. The name of the Board states that a
submission will be answered within 100 hours; however, the Board
has been known to often take longer to answer questions based on
the level of difficulty. The Board sometimes answers questions in a
humorous, witty, and researched manner. Use of the Board is free,
and the staff is comprised of unpaid student volunteers. For
reasons that remain unclear, registration is now required in order
to be able to submit questions. These questions can include most
topics such as
trivia,
abstract scientific concepts,
politics, dating advice, and
LDS Church
doctrine. The Board has a vast, searcheable archive, and those
wishing to submit a question are strongly encouraged to search the
archives first to see if the query has been answered before.
Questions are answered by Board writers, who for the most part
remain anonymous. There are about 31 Board writers. Most lucky
students who attain this coveted position stay until they graduate
from BYU. Under the recent administration several writers have been
purged from duty with trivial reasons. BYUSA left a legacy.
The
100 Hour Board is administered by the BYU Linguistics department as
a resource for
Linguistics majors and others to study current
popular English usage. All submissions, therefore, become the
property of the Linguistics department to be used at its
discretion. In other words, students' questions and responses have
the potential to become research paper fodder.
One of the many
mysteries of the 100 Hour Board is how to become a writer for it.
Although all writers are volunteers, the application process is
kept a secret. Several writers are Linguistics majors; many,
however, are not. If someone asks the 100 Hour Board how to become
a writer, they will most likely be told to search the board's
archives. In the last several months, several writers have been
purged from duty
History
The 100 Hour Board originally
started in 1995 as a physical board in the Wilkinson Center (BYU's
Student Center). Its primary function was to serve as a
"
Suggestion
Box" for the Student Advisory Council (SAC) to better discern
the issues that students were worried about. In 1998 the first
documented "
humor" or
non-serious question was asked, which began a process which would
eventually lead to the 100 Hour Board's popularization. In the year
2000 the first online version of the 100 Hour Board was released.
Over the next few years the website for the 100 Hour Board went
through several revisions, as well as changes in sponsorship. The
100 Hour Board is currently sponsored by the Linguistics
department.
