The term "going Bamboo" is an old Naval term once used by the British Navy and the East India Trade Company. It refers to employees stationed in or sent to Indonesia, India, Philippines, and Malaysia who decide to not return home after prolonged stays. It implies a complete detachement of the familiar in a the sense of a cultural shock acceptance and an overwhelming feeling of absolute spiritual peacefulness.
