  • Plot

The movie begins with a montage set to The White Stripes “I Think We’re Going to Be Friends” in which Bryce (Inez Gonzalez) and Nick (Andy Cardenas) wake up and prepare for their first day of their senior year in high school.

Now on the bus, Nick, takes a seat and begins to call Bryce on his cell phone. After much banter about their previous encounters with various other cliques Bryce and Nick decide to pose as band students this year. After a loud cheer, they realize they are on the same bus and sit down next to each other. The bus then picks up another group of students, but this group of students isn’t an ordinary group for it hides the very annoying, Jack (played by Henry Garcia). Jack sees Nick and Bryce and sits behind them annoying them with his usual banter, but lucky someone calls him to the back of bus.

With the thought of the band still burned in their brains Bryce and Nick get off the bus and race towards the counseling office to change their schedules only to find out they need an appointment. Broken, and utterly discouraged they run into Phony Montana (play by Gustavo Alba) who hooks them up with two appointment cards at his 50% off discount.

Now with their schedules changed they embark on their first day of band class where they meet the drop dead gorgeous second chair clarinet girl, Mia, (played by Chantal Ignacio) the timid trumpet guy and the eccentric Mr. Antalik. After a romp through the band class, Mr. Antalik welcomes Nick and Bryce and tells them that he will be giving them a placement exam tomorrow even though Nick and Bryce persist they belong in the first chair.

At the placement exam Nick tries to impress Mr. Antalik with an electric keytar, but fails and Bryce tries his skills on the triangle but fails as well. Mr. Antalik then thoroughly explains that they don’t need that kind of garage in the band room, but offers them a second chance to redeem themselves. What follows is a montage set to the “Laverne and Shirley” theme song were Nick and Bryce go wild and crazy in band room by: putting glue in trumpets, cracking cymbals, getting in trouble with Mr. Antalik, and Bryce, trying to impress Mia, the attractive clarinet player, whom he is madly in love with.

On to the memorable party scene were Nick and Bryce show up to the hottest band party of the year and to their dismay is hosted by Jack. They find it quite boring, until the resident “band geek” hooks them up with some non-alcoholic beers which they interpret to be alcoholic beers and get drunk off their butts. Then while drunk, Bryce tries to approach Mia to tell her how he feels, but he finds out the hard way that telling a girl the way you feel about her while drunk is not a good thing. With rejection slammed in his face Bryce decides to leave, followed by Nick.

The next day Bryce and Nick find themselves the laughing stock of the school because they got drunk off non-alcoholic beers and when Bryce tries to approach Mia once again to tell her how he feels he is slammed with an even bigger rejection, in front of the entire band class. Feeling alone and down, Bryce enters into a deep depression, but quickly snaps out of it when he realizes that he can prove to Mia that he can be serious and not just a poser. A “Rocky” montage ensues as Bryce prepares for the band finals tomorrow.

The day of band finals and Nick and Bryce are on the bus driving to school. Nick and Bryce begin to argue about band, Bryce is trying to break away from Nick’s ideas of posing and always being a procrastinator, but Nick is not in any mood to change not even for his best friend. The huge fight explodes and Nick takes off leaving Bryce alone and by himself.

Later that day, right before band finals begin Bryce finds Nick hiding up in the balcony of the band room. There Nick and Bryce repair their crumbling relationship. Even though Nick will never stop being a poser he accepts Bryce’s decision to go forth and finish something for once. Bryce races to the band room to perform his final and passes with flying colors. Mia gives a smirk to Bryce as he finishes his performance.

As Bryce walks out of the band room Mia stops him and apologizes for treating him so badly, the two make up and walk off together, a happy couple. We pan back to Nick looking off in the distance, he is discouraged. He slowly walks down the band hallway and stops, he sees a girl sitting on the floor of the hallway doing something on her phone. The Electric Light Orchestra’s “It’s A Living Thing” begins to play as Nick asks the girl what she does, she responds “I’m a techie.”
