Barada is a
fictional character from the
Star Wars
universe who was born on the planet
Klatooine. The Klatooinians
are dull-eyed,
canine-faced humanoids. Since Klatooinians name most
of their children after historical figures, Barada shared his name
with many others of his race. This has lead some sources to
inaccurately identify Klatooinians as "Baradas".
Barada was
disrespectful as a youth, and his parents sold him into indentured
servitude to the highest bidder. Eventually Barada found himself in
the employ of
Jabba the Hutt.
Despite Barada's
below-average intellect, he was adept with machinery and soon was
in charge of maintaining Jabba's luxury vehicles, especially his
prized sail barge. Barada made a respectable sum with his services,
but was never able to purchase his freedom, because the crafty Hutt
charged him exactly the same amount of money for room and board as
his salary.
When Jabba set out to the
Dune Sea to execute
Luke Skywalker,
Han Solo and
Chewbacca, Barada
was among the guards on the skiff with the prisoners. When the
Rebels suddenly fought their way free, Barada was the first of many
of Jabba's underlings to fall to his death into the gaping maw of
the hungry
Sarlacc.
Barada appears in the movie
Return of the Jedi. His name is
taken from a famous quote ("
Klaatu barada nikto") in the 1951
movie
The Day the Earth Stood
Still.
