The basketball rivalry between these two teams isn't commonly referred to as "the Battle for the Bones", but it has a longer history and tends to be a more intense and heated affair.
The rivalry between Memphis and UAB is one that has been on going since the 1980s, when Conference USA was formed. Although it started off as a heated rivalry, since 2006 (UAB's last win), Memphis has not shown as much aggression towards the rivalry. In recent years with Memphis at the top of C-USA, many UAB fans have been bringing fire back to the rivalry, wearing such shirts as "Beat Memphis" shirts and "Winning Streak Stops Here". This is creating fuel for the rivalry in basketball and is getting more intense.
On February 16, 2008 during a game at UAB, the Tigers were nearly upset before pulling out a win of 79-78. As the Tigers were down by 8 points with 2 minutes left, they went on a 9-1 run. Many UAB fans began getting upset and yelling at the Memphis players, some of the Tigers began taunting and yelling back at the angered fans. Soon, people in the stands began booing them off the court and throwing drinks and trash at them, they were escorted off the court by local police officers.[3]
In the last meeting between UAB and Memphis was on Thursday February 26, 2009. Memphis won 71-60 at Birmingham.[4] This win was the 55th straight conference win (including postseason), which helped them extend the third-longest conference win in Division I history; only passed by the 1945-1950 University of Kentucky Wildcats with a record of 64 straight SEC wins, and the 1955-1960 West Virginia University Mountaineers with 59 straight Southern Conference wins. This win against UAB also extended the 2008-2009 Memphis Tigers winning streak to 19, the longest in the country at the time.
